Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I has been many years since I saw my Aunt Betty, we moved from Winnipeg in the mid 1980's and after my father's death in 1996 we just lost contact. One of the things I would like to say about Betty is that while I was still a child, we would visit with her and Reg in their apartment on Stradbrook Ave in Winnipeg. My favourite memories of her was at Christmas when we would go there at Christmas or New Years and share a delicious meal. She was a great cook! The best part that me and my brothers would look forward to was dessert, Betty made Cheese cake, which we got no where else and it was a wonderful treat. The other thing that we loved was that Betty always had cut out books, or picture books for us as gifts and often many comics to read though (they always had the front cover removed, tho but we didn't know they were throwaways from where she worked) and we loved that she seemed to choose the books we most enjoyed! Betty had a black raggedy ann doll that my grandmother (Doris Gent) had made for her and had made one exactly the same for me, but Betty had her raggedy ann doll for many years after I had played mine to death! I always wished that I had cared for my raggedy better, but I was just a kid! Betty was about the same age as my own Mother (Margaret Merry) but as I got older I realized that there was some animosity between them, which I never did know what or why and no matter what my Mom said about Betty, I knew her to be a nice person and I know I always liked to see her and like many little girls of that time, I thought that she was quite beautiful and very fashionable -- I looked up to her as the kind of person I would like to grow up to be. I am sorry for her passing, and sincerely hope that the last 20 years of her time was happy and that she was fulfilled with her volunteer work, even tho this part of her family did not have contact with her. Sincerely, Susan (Merry) Barker - Posted by: Susan (Merry) Barker (niece -- John C Merry's eldest daughter) on: Aug 31, 2015
