ZOFIA KLEBAN With profound sadness and shock, the family announces the sudden passing of Zofia Kleban (Sophie) on July 26, 2015 at St. Boniface Hospital. Zofia was predeceased by her husband Emil on May 31, 2014. Zofia is survived by her sister Lodja Maslanka, her son Richard Emil Kleban (Sandra), daughter Krystyna Helena Cox and granddaughters Natalia Pedersen (Carl) and Ashley Cox. Also, nephews Danny Maslanka (Debbie), Richard Maslanka (Susan) both of Winnipeg and niece Caroline Butrymowicz of Nottingham, England. Zofia Butrymowicz was born on October 1, 1930 in Poland. Uprooted and displaced with her siblings during the Second World War, she journeyed to Uganda with the Red Cross where she lived in Children's Camp until 1948. She settled in Nottingham, England where she was reunited with her family. On December 26, 1949, she married Emil Kleban at St. Barnabas Church in Nottingham. Zofia and Emil were surrounded by her family and their many friends in the large Polish community in Nottingham. After the birth of Richard in 1954, they immigrated to Winnipeg on April 9, 1959. In 1960, Krystyna was born. In 1963, Emil and Zofia bought their first home in Windsor Park. Zofia was an exceptional housekeeper and gifted cook; any activity was improved when she brought food whether it was Polish specialties or trays of dainties or the many soups and meat dishes that adorned her table. Her devoted husband Emil took great pride in Zofia's cooking and entertaining abilities. Zofia took great pride in her home and her appearance - both were always immaculate and stylish. In 1973, their new home in Southdale became the centre of family food, fun and life especially after their granddaughters were born. Zofia was a proud Babcia to Natalia and Ashley. She cooked their favourite foods, played soccer and catch with them and there was always a card game on the living room floor. Zofia worked as a Tailoress in England, and continued to sew piecework in her own home in Canada. She later worked at the Southdale Kmart until retiring in 1986. Again, her gift for making friends created many lasting relationships. Zofia lived the last few years of her life at 576 St. Anne's Road where she made friends, loved playing cards, going out for coffee and sharing her pineapple slice and other goodies. Her car was the cleanest in the parking lot, devoid of dust in summer and snow in winter. We have been so lucky to have her as a mother, mother-in-law and Babcia. She set high standards for her family in the way she lived her life and we miss her so very much. We are grateful that Zofia had the chance to dance at Natalia and Carl's wedding in June. We will always love, deeply mourn and miss her amazing energy and personality. Thanks to the Staff in Ward 5E and B5 at St. Boniface Hospital for their gentle care and compassion in the twelve days in which Zofia was in their care. In compliance with Zofia's wishes, a private family inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
