ANNE MAUREEN COLISH May 2, 1979 - July 31, 2015 Peacefully, at the age of 36, after a brief but immensely courageous battle with brain cancer, Anne passed away, surrounded by her family. Anne was born in Winnipeg, raised near Ste. Genevieve, MB, and schooled at Anola Elementary School, Ecole Regent Park, Springfield Collegiate Institute, the University of Manitoba, and Red River College. As a child she loved to figure-skate, both solo and precision. She played saxophone and sang in her high school and university jazz bands. Babies and animals were always a draw for Anne, and she never lived cat-less. She was an avid home-team sports fan, and though not a season ticket-holder, she was a proud jersey-wearer, and had a pretty good command of the Jets and Bombers stats. A favourite and regular pastime was singing karaoke at Saffron's and Club 60. Her karaoke crew will now be one voice quieter, though there is no doubt that their enthusiastic love for her will fill the acoustic void. Anne always sought opportunities to volunteer, at Adult EAL and elementary schools in the Winnipeg School Division, for Special Olympics, at cat shelters, and since 1995 annually at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. She spent much of her working life with special needs children and teens at the YM-YWCA's Before and After School program, a job which she loved. It spoke to her open heart, and her rare gift of being able to truly connect with her charges. It could be said that Anne's favourite people to be with were her immediate and extended family. Family get-togethers for birthdays, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, vacations, Christmas, Hannukah, and the annual LOWISA sailing regatta meant good times, good company and good food. But her love for her family was clearly deeper than special occasions, for she was never shy to proclaim her affection and admiration, especially for her brothers and sister, on any day of the year. But beware her quirky and biting wit, which she could never maintain for very long without bursting into laughter. Anne encountered serious medical challenges throughout her short life, but she faced each one with determination, courage and optimism, and was an inspiration to many. Anne, we all love you so much, and will miss you everyday. Your spirit lives on, and we will be reminded of your strength and joy in life every time we see a rainbow (especially the purple hues) which graced the evening sky the night before you passed. Anne is survived by her parents, Lorne and Madeline (Ford); younger brothers, Will (Annik) and Jack; big sister Jane; grandmother Betty Ford, many aunts, uncles and cousins; and best friend Sandra. Also left behind are her cat Zoey, and family dog Scooter. The family wishes to thank the wonderful and kind staff at CancerCare, Steinbach Bethesda Hospital, Home Care and Palliative Care (SouthEast RHA), Ste. Anne Hospital, and Drs. de Moissac, Reimer, Krahn, Pitz, and Lach, and all the family and friends who have supported us these last few months. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Special Olympics Manitoba, the Winnipeg Humane Society or other animal shelter, CancerCare Manitoba, or the Winnipeg Folk Festival. A private burial has been held. A Memorial for Anne will be held at a later date. Last time I was with Anne at Club 60, we sang the Anything For Love duet by Meatloaf. It was great. I remember belting it out with her reaching for a few high notes as well. I did not discover til now that she has passed on, possibly to bigger and better. My deepest condolences to Anne's family and close friends. I plan to sing a song for her every time I sing karaoke. My condolences. I had the pleasure of coaching S.O. swimmers with Anne at Cindy Klassen pool on cold winter nights last year. Her upbeat conversations will sadly be missed. I knew the Colish children when they attended Anola School. I was a TA during that time (now retired from a job I LOVED). I remember the faces of these little children and I even remembered their names as I heard of Anne's passing. I am devastated of this news. Anne was a good friend of daughter Karen's and I remember her attending birthday parties at our house when we had a pool. Our deepest sympathies to the family, Will, Jack and Jane, be strong because Anne would want you to be. Anne, I will never forget your happy attitude. When my life was in a turmoil, it was Anne who came over to see me. We had fun baking cookies and she made me forget that I was even sad! She was also a student of mine. Your life was a short one, but a caring one. Rest in peace my dear. - Posted by: Val Gorin (Teacher and friend .) on: Aug 05, 2015
