(ARTHUR) EDWIN CASSIE On a warm, sunny September day as the geese began their southern migration, Ed Cassie got his own wings and rejoined his beloved wife Mildred who predeceased him in 1994. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Ed was a bank messenger and a Pilot Officer in the Air Force before dedicating 36 years to IBM. That's where a beautiful keypunch operator named Mildred caught his eye and then his heart. They married in 1950 and had one son, Glen. Ed was a proud grandfather to Cole, Scott, and Parker and warmly welcomed Tricia, Justin and Kirk into Glen's life. Ed enjoyed sports like tennis, golf and badminton, and fondly remembered the years he and Glen had Blue Bomber season tickets. He did the books at St. Andrews United Church for decades, and as he put it "tried his best" to sing in the choir. Ed loved to do Sunday crosswords (in pen), and notoriously labelled everything he owned. He loved gadgets and tools, bought gift wrap in bulk, and was never without a pocket knife, pen, or his trusty pocket calendar. He passed away quietly at Victoria Hospital on September 21, 2015 at the age of 91, and we appreciate the compassionate care of the staff and the years of candid advice and care from Dr. Salem. A celebration of Ed's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Young United Church, 222 Furby St. at Broadway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross, Winnipeg Humane Society, or MADD Canada.
