LAWRENCE KENNETH HAMIN
Born: Mar 06, 1928
Date of Passing: Oct 09, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE KENNETH HAMIN March 6, 1928 - October 9, 2015 It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful father, husband and grandfather. Lawrence Kenneth Hamin succumbed to his most recent illness on October 9, 2015 at the Victoria General Hospital, at the age of 87. "Laurie" as he was known to many, will be lovingly remembered by Theresa, his wife of 59 years, children, Tracey (Randy), Kim, Ken (Tamara), Todd, and seven precious grandchildren, Lauren, Riley, Kendra, Keaton, Tanner, Mackenzie and Grace. Uncle Laurie will also be sadly missed by nephews Doug and Gerry Homenick, and nieces Patty Homenick and Theresa Wielgosh. Lawrence was born in Ashfield, MB on March 6, 1928. He was predeceased by his parents Nick and Nettie Homenuk, sister Ethel Rumak, and brother Harry Homenick. Laurie grew up in East Kildonan and completed Grade 12 at St. John's High School. Laurie graduated as a pharmacist in 1952 from the University of Manitoba and moved to work in Selkirk. In 1965 he received his certificate by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. He met the love of his life Theresa Yurchak of Wishart, SK in 1954 while working at Gibbs Drug Store in Selkirk and they married August 9, 1956 at St. Alphonsus Church on Munroe Avenue. Over the years he worked in various pharmacies in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba but he is most known for owning and managing the Falcon Lake Drug Store for 30 years from 1958 to 1988. It was here that he created some of his fondest memories. Despite the long 14 hour days, seven days a week, Laurie continued to tackle each season with perseverance. He also ran the post-office from 1959 to 1967 and the liquor store from 1970 to 1988. No day was complete without his morning coffee at "The Nest" with fellow business owners. Laurie generously extended a helping hand to all and focused on providing the best of service and care. Numerous stories surface when family encounter old friends and customers of the Falcon Lake Drug Store. They tell of times since he sold the business that they missed Laurie and his smiling face. People often spoke of the little extras he gave to his customers which was never expected but always remembered. In his early years Lawrence enjoyed skiing, curling and badminton with family and friends. In his later years he loved naps, reading the newspaper and watching old movies. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who took pride in all of our successes and supported our failures as the true life lessons they are. Laurie was a very gentle and sincere man who had nurses and caregivers commenting on how nice he truly was. On behalf on Lawrence, the family extends our deepest gratitude to all who cared for him at Victoria General Hospital, Deer Lodge Centre, Dakota House and Home Care over the last eight years. Family often commented on how Laurie had "nine lives", going through a multitude of health issues over the past 25 years. He frequently told of how "it sucks to get old", but his courage and unprecedented will to live was grand. Laurie smiled through the toughest of times and rarely complained. Now we trust his care to God, and know he will continue to smile over us. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lawrence's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home at 4000 Portage Avenue on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Public viewing at 1:30 p.m. Cremation and private interment will take place at a later date. Father Fred Olds will be officiating. "When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure." For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Ken, Todd, and Families, My deepest condolences on your loss. I have fond memories of dinner with Ken, his family, and Mr. Hamin. I remember his warm smile, his chuckle and snicker during Ken and my joking moments, and most of all his warm embrace of his family and their friends. As the years progressed, and I moved away for work, our time together diminished, however those positive memories always remained. I remember Mr. Hamin's desire to work, and learned about a pharmacist "hired gun" which in the '80s was a new concept for me. I want to express my deepest sympathies to you and your family. I know you had great memories together as a family, and these are what you will keep close to your heart. My father passed away this summer, and there is not a day I do not think of him. It will be difficult and he will be missed, but I feel that he is looking down from above. Take care and until we next meet, be well, be courageous, and most of all be supportive of each other. Kind regards Bruce and Stella McTavish - Posted by: Bruce & Stella McTavish (Friends of the Hamin Family) on: Oct 29, 2015

So many memories of your dad. Your dad/family always made me feel welcome. The many years spent at your family home or at Falcon, I felt like part of the family. When I think of your dad, the memory of your dad at the store in Falcon, either behind the pharmacy, liquor or cash counter peering over his glasses and giving everyone a bright smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. - Posted by: Aynsley Ward (Family friend) on: Oct 19, 2015

Dear Terri, Tracey, Kim, Ken and Todd, Laurie has a very special place in my memories of our summers at Falcon Lake. When you are "little", a summer stretches on "forever" and so many memories are made in a short space of time! Living for a few weeks every year just up the road from your family, and visiting the Falcon Lake Drugstore several times a day during our holidays have made a lasting impression on me. With so many other people in your lives over the years, you may not remember me much, but family have always been important to me and even more so as I get older. Between Laurie (mom's cousin) running the Drug Store, and my Grandpa (John Ennis) running the Post Office and Hardware store, I felt that we practically owned the whole town of Falcon Lake (or at least had claim to a considerable part of it!). I couldn't have asked for fonder childhood memories of a town, and simple way of life with caring neighbors and family that seems to have disappeared in today's hectic life styles. Enough of my reminiscing though! I just want to say how privileged I am to have known Lawrie and all of your family growing up. He was always so kind to us as children. My brothers, Shawn and Pat, and myself, felt at home in the store picking out our penny candies and buying popsicles every day of the summer. I can still see Laurie's smiling face and hear his laugh. He was a busy man, but never to busy for a smile and a wave as we raced in and out of the store and his life each summer. Thank you, Laurie and family, for all of those happy memories. You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this time. It's been many years since I was in Manitoba, but in my memories it seems like just yesterday. I look forward to sharing some ice cold popsicles with you in heaven one day! With much love and prayers, Maureen Krump (nee Ennis) - Posted by: Maureen Krump (nee Ennis) (second cousin) on: Oct 18, 2015

I grew up with Mr Hamin at the Falcon Lake Drug store, as a child I remember going in on the last days of business in October, Mr Hamin would take the front cover off a magazine and give it to my sister and I, it made closing the cottage for the season a little more bearable. I also worked at the Drug store and loved using the old cash register, it had a crank for when the power went off. Oh those were the days. I will be thinking of you " his family in this difficult time. - Posted by: Beth Hiebert, nee Powell () on: Oct 16, 2015

Dear Terri and beautiful family...my sincere condolences to you. Laurie WAS such a GENTLE-MAN, in the true sense of the word. The last time my sister and I visited, he wanted prayer just like Terri.
