MORRIS MONEAS With his family and friends by his side Morris Moneas passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015. Throughout his life Morris worked for the band council as a welfare administrator, band council member, and later as the education counsellor for 38 years. He was first elected as councillor in 1982 and held that position for six terms totalling six consecutive years. He was a highly respected member of the community, as well as an easy going person who was knowledgeable and always willing to take part in decisions that made a difference in our community. His ability to communicate with other communities and government representatives was essential to the running of our band council, as well as the role he took to support many of the community's Elders whom he would visit on a regular basis. One of his gifts was promoting and encouraging our Anishinaabe culture through ceremony. Each summer he played an important role at the community fast ceremonies, where he will be greatly missed. Morris had the spirit of a young man who constantly enjoyed bringing laughter to the lives of others through his teasing. He will be sorely missed at the band office. He spent his life on the land as a fisherman, trapper, and hunter and enjoyed attending recreational activities such as hockey and bingo. He was also very involved in community events such as treaty days, sports, and Black Island Days. Morris was predeceased by his sons Leslie and Alec, parents Peter and Marjorie, brothers Randall (Ruby) and Freeman (Jean), sister Yvonne, godparents Nancy and William Peebles, and various beloved family members. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Zelma, his sons Chap (Pat), Palmi, Jeremy (Marsha), Blair (Trena), and Jules (Rachel), adopted daughters Sheri Wood and Kelly Bushie, his good friends Wes (Sandra), siblings Edgar (Lena), Lloyd (MJ), Wilma, Harley (Corrine), Leo (Darlene), Clarice (Brian), and adopted sister Marilyn (Dennis), Auntie Lorriane Moneyas, Auntie Alice Moneyas, and Uncle Norman, his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, various in-laws, extended family and friends. A special thank you to all those who supported and assisted in caring for him and his family during this time, including the staff of Pine Falls hospital. Wake services were held from Saturday, October 31 to Monday, November 2 at their residence in Hollow Water with funeral services to follow on Tuesday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hollow Water Band Hall officiated by Norman Meade. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Peter, Daytona, Dixon, Malik, Christian, Malcolm, Leslie Jr., and O'Neil, with honourable pallbearers Wesley, Paul Bernard, Dennis and Marilyn, Edgar, Leo, Harley, Lloyd, Rod Bunn, Stewart (Slim) Bird, Reg Kern, and Wilson Scott. He will be forever missed by all who knew him. So for now we bid him farewell because we know heaven has inherited another angel!
