DOUGLAS WALKER March 11, 1933 - November 4, 2015 With heavy hearts, the family of Doug Walker announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at the Health Sciences Centre. Doug will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Sophie; daughter Dorothy Bird (grandsons Scott and Brett); son Brad (Brenda) (grandchildren Zoey Walker, Jordan Kwiatek, Hope Patrick (Anthony) (great-granddaughter Ellie) and Haley Kiwatek); and son Keith (Marnie) (granddaughters Camryn and Chloe). Doug was predeceased by his son Kirk, parents Hugh and Jessie Walker, sisters Jean Balichowski and Beatrice Lajeunesse, and brothers Bob and John Walker. He is survived by his sister Anne Klea and brothers Hugh and Alexander Walker. Doug was born and raised in Transcona. Following three years of army service, including time spent in Korea, he was employed by CN for 38 years. After a brief retirement, he began a second 17 year career with the Commissionaires, working at the CRA offices on Stapon Road. When Doug met Sophie, it was "love at first sight" and she became his wife, his sweetheart and his best friend. Through good times and hard times, joy and sorrow, they raised their family and loved one another for 61 years. After Doug's second retirement, they did everything together and you rarely saw one without the other. Nearly every Saturday night for the past 30 years they could be found at their dining room table playing Yahtzee together. Doug was a friendly man with a great sense of humour who had a smile for everybody. He was always generous and willing to help his family and friends. Even while nearing the end of his life, he was concerned with comforting his wife and family. The family would like to thank Dr. Harding and the staff of HSC SICU and Step-Down units for the comfort and care they provided to Doug. They would especially like to express their appreciation to Dr. Chan at Concordia Hospital Emergency for her quick diagnosis and action which gave them precious extra time with Doug. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Chapel, 455 Lagimodiere Boulevard (across from the Mint).
