Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIGNATIUS SALVATORE SCALETTA January 12, 1926 - November 10, 2015 On November 10, 2015, well into his 90th year, Ignatius Salvatore Scaletta went peacefully into the waiting arms of God. Predeceased by his parents, Salvatore and Concetta (nee Tascona) Scaletta, and by his youngest brother, Joseph Scaletta, he leaves to mourn Shirley (nee Elhatton), his loving wife of more than 62 years, daughter, Lynn McGhee (John), sons Dean (Rachel) and Todd (Christine), grandchildren Lisa, Jason, Sophia, Sara, Abby, Lauren, and Jack, great-grandchildren Shanea, Shayla, and Samantha, great-great-grandchildren, Nevaeha and Keenan, brothers Sam (Marie) and Augie, sister-in-law Patricia, and numerous nieces and nephews. "Seano" to his friends and family, and "Iggy" to those competed with or against him (or were officiated by him) on the baseball diamond or on the hockey rink, he was a man whose skill and tenacity as an athlete belied his kind soul and his gentle nature in the roles of husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. For 25 years until his retirement in 1991, Seano worked first with the City of St. Boniface and later, after amalgamation, with the City of Winnipeg. He valued the friendships he made with his co-workers, and the trusting relationships he developed with those street and sidewalk contractors whose work he was tasked with inspecting. He excelled at hockey as an adolescent and as a young man, helping power his Provencher squad to the 1942 Suburban Schools Hockey League Championship. His passion, however, was baseball. A skilled lead-off power hitter, he was a self-described "little rascal" as a base runner and as a second baseman. As youngsters, he was fond of telling us that certain opposition outfielders were still chasing a ball he had hit down Thomas Berry Street! In September, 1943, the world was at war. It was then that this Prairie boy, not yet 18 years of age, volunteered for, of all things, the Navy. He was on active service from October, 1944 to November, 1945, receiving the Atlantic Star and several other medals. Returning to Winnipeg, Iggy continued his stellar baseball career, winning three championships in six years as a member of the Rosedale Juniors (1946), the St. James Legion Seniors (1948, when he also named league MVP), and the St. Boniface Native Sons Seniors (1951). From 1951 to 1995, he umpired at the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior levels. His most memorable assignment was as the first base umpire in the tension-filled Gold Medal game between archrivals U.S.A. and Cuba at the 1967 Pan-American Games. Iggy has twice been inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012 as a player and as an umpire, and in 2015 as a member of the Rosedales organization. The family is grateful for the compassionate and respectful care Seano received at St. Boniface General Hospital and, for the last year of his life, at River Park Gardens. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Parish, 820 Cottonwood Road, in Winnipeg, with reception and interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Active, healthy living options for seniors, and support for young families in times of need, were always of utmost importance to Seano. A gift to an agency which advances one of these goals would be greatly appreciated. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550
