THOMAS DANIEL SONTAG January 22, 1984 - December 14, 2015 It is with immense sorrow in our hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Daniel Sontag on the morning of December 14, 2015 at his home, in the arms of his loving wife Nicole. While Tom ultimately lost his life to brain cancer, he did not lose the battle, because you beat terminal cancer by how you live, something Tom did to the utmost. Though Tom's amazing qualities were too numerous to count, he was best known for his incredible sense of humour, upbeat positivity, and limitless care and compassion for all those around him. Tom truly exemplified the best in humanity. He never took a single second of his life for granted, could never bring himself to give up on anyone or anything, and faced each challenge with the biggest smile on his face and the corniest joke up his sleeve. Despite being offered a grim prognosis, Tom finished his B. Comm (Hons) degree amidst aggressive chemo and radiation treatments, graduating with a I. H. Asper School of Business Medal for Excellence. He married the love of his life, spent time travelling and took great pride in his job at WOW! Hospitality Concepts. No matter the circumstances he faced he never lost his positive spirit, famously saying "Some people look at their glass as half empty...Some people look at their glass as half full...I look at my glass and say HEY! I HAVE A GLASS!!!". It has been said that there are some souls who bring a light so great into the world, that even after they have gone, the light still remains. Tom was one of those people. You couldn't help but feel happy around him, and excited about all the things life had to offer. The devastating absence of Tom's life in this world leaves an unbearable ache in the hearts of so many. A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at The Pavilion Event Center (55 Pavilion Crescent) located in Assiniboine Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to CancerCare MB foundation in Tom's honour. Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • I worked with Tom over the years while he was at Mom's and Children's Paradise and then afterwards when he moved on to WOW Hospitality. He was, like everyone knows and has said, a tremendously optimistic person through his entire being. I looked forward to our once or twice a year conversations (usually over the phone) where I could literally feel his infectious smile on the other end. No matter how much time a person was lucky enough to spend with Tom he always left a lasting impression - Posted by: Jason Smith (Friend) on: Dec 21, 2015

  • Donna, thinking of you and your family with deepest sympathy and heartfelt understanding for the loss of your son. Derek and Robin, you have my sympathy for the loss of your brother. Condolences to the Sontag and Kramble families. - Posted by: Sophie Walker (Family Friends) on: Dec 19, 2015

  • Thinking of all the family and friends going through the heartache of having to say good bye. Tenderly may time heal your sorrow, gently may friends ease your pain, softly may peace replace your heartaches and may warmest memories remain. - Posted by: Jennifer (Friend of his mom) on: Dec 16, 2015

  • Tom always saw the best in people. I could be myself around him and joke around knowing that he would appreciate the same sense of humour. I can't think of a time we spent together where there wasn't a lot of laughter. Thank you for the incredible memories my friend. You'll never be forgotten. - Posted by: Bryan (Friend) on: Dec 16, 2015

  • My condolences to Toms Families and to Nicole. I am grateful for the way you cared for Tom, that we were able to have so many more years with him. I know this would not have been possible without you. God Bless. - Posted by: Tory Toews (Friend) on: Dec 16, 2015

  • He was declared terminal but came back to finish degree with us. Despite chemo, seizures, and everything else Thomas exemplified every human quality we admire and wish to see. We talk about the empathetic, creative, ethical business leader. Thomas showed us what that ideal was. - Posted by: Howard R. Harmatz (Instructor Asper School of Business) on: Dec 16, 2015

  • It was an honour to have known Tommy. He was a good friend to my kids and we all will greatly miss him. Our heart, thoughts and prayers goes out to Nicole, her family and Tommy's. There is also a gofundme account set up for Nicole as she has been off working caring for Tommy for almost 5 months without an income. Nicole would never ask for anything, but she does need our help. https://www.gofundme.com/8qbpszyk. - Posted by: Brenda Balinski (Friend) on: Dec 16, 2015

  • There aren't enough words to describe Thomas Sontag. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loving wife, Nicole, and his family. He always knew how to handle a frustrating situation. Never panicked or got mad, just smiled and laughed about it. His sense of humour always made me chuckle. I can remember some of his FB posts where the term "FUDGE NUGGETS" was used lol. You will be missed my friend. May you rest in peace. - Posted by: Mitch David & Michelle Reinheimer (Friends) on: Dec 16, 2015
