BARBARA FRANCIS SCHARF September 19, 1942 - December 23, 2015 Peacefully on December 23, 2015 Barb lost her short battle with cancer and passed away at Riverview Health Centre. Barb is predeceased by her parents Edna and Ken Compton; brother Don Compton; mother and father-in-law Elmer and Elva Scharf; brother-in-law Melvin Scharf. She will be deeply missed by her husband Donald; son Paul (Michele); daughter Paula (Joseph); her five grandchildren, Colin and Joel Scharf, Brent Scharf, Erin and Megan Ryan. She will also be missed by her brother Mel (Vi) Compton and sister-in-law Adel Compton, and loving nieces and nephews and other extended family. Barb was born September 19, 1942 in Thunder Bay while her father was in the Canadian Air Force. The family then moved to B.C. and then finally on to Darlingford. It was here that she was raised in a great small community and met her husband Don. Barb obtained her teachers certificate after she moved to Winnipeg. She taught at St. George School, and made lifelong friends during this time. She returned to the work she enjoyed later in life at Glenlawn Collegiate as a work facilitator. Barb enjoyed curling, both playing and watching and was a member of the St. Vital Curling Club. She loved to read, and book club gatherings were special. Bridge club was also a great time to meet with friends. One of her favourite things was attending grandchildren's activities and being with them. Spending time at their cottage at Lake of the Woods for over 30 years was always a highlight and in recent years she enjoyed their condominium in Phoenix. A memorial service will be held at Meadowood United Church, Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:30 p.m., 1111 Dakota Street. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Health Sciences Centre, CancerCare and Riverview Health Centre for all of their care and compassion. If people wish to honour her memory, donations can be made to one of the charity organizations dear to her: The Movement Center of Manitoba, 1646 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R2G 1N7; Children's Rehabilitation Foundation, 633 Wellington Cres., Winnipeg, MB R3M 0A8, or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • Our family has wonderful memories of spending New Year's at the lake with all the Scharf's. Barb's liver pate was something I always looked forward to as the New year's treat. There were 16 of us staying in Paul and Michele's cabin and all of our kids grew up looking forward to celebrating with Barb and Don. You were a wonderful person, always making us feel welcome and always happy to see all the kids and families. We will miss you and your beautiful smile. Our condolences to the Scharf family. • I have had the pleasure of knowing Barb for a little over seven years now. I loved our visits together at the salon. She always greeted me by saying "Hey Love" with a big smile on her face. She had a heart of gold, and it showed through her actions. I've never met someone who loved their family and friends as much as Barb did. My condolences to Don, Paul, Michele, Paula, Joe & grandkids. - Posted by: Tracey Osioway (Hairstylist) on: Jan 04, 2016

  • I first met Barb at St George School when I was a beginning teacher. She became a wonderful mentor. Since that beginning our friendship grew and remained constant for 5o+ years in spite of the miles which separated us after I moved to the west coast.I feel so blessed to have had such a wonderful person in my life. Sincere sympathy to Don and to each of her family. - Posted by: carol wilkie (friend) on: Jan 02, 2016

I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." • For years, Barb would bring Megan to The Movement Centre on Wednesday mornings. Both "girls" would come into the Centre smiling and giggling and sharing their adventures from the night before. Turns out- every Tuesday was sleepover night at Grandma's. Megan would always arrive fashionably early, often bringing treats made the night before. Barb and I had great discussions on a wide variety of topics; She was one great lady and I will really miss her beaming smile. ( Barb, I meant to send you a card telling you how much I respected you; Christmas rush came and I ran out of time). Rest in peace, my friend. - Posted by: Margy Nelson (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2015
