ANITA JOYCE CHESTER June 6, 1953 - January 21, 2016 On January 21, 2016, after a six month battle, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, succumbed to brain cancer. We thank the 3 North staff at Grace Hospital for making Mom's stay as comfortable as possible. Anita was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Gerald Cumming; stepfather Barney Johnson; and her mother-in-law Nel Roy, who passed away in Penticton, BC less than 20 hours before Anita's passing. Mom is survived by Jim, her favourite husband of 38 years; son James (Ann) of Kelowna and daughter Heather Rae (Dale) and grandson Logan of Sylvan Lake, Alberta; also siblings, Geralyn, Claudia, Dawn and Edwin, along with their spouses and families; longtime friend Linda Lindsay of Penticton and many other good friends and relatives in Manitoba and BC. Anita was born in Kaslo in the West Kootenay region of beautiful British Columbia in 1953. Years later in 1978, Anita and Jim were married in Nelson where James and Heather were born. Eventually in 1988, the family settled in Penticton where they enjoyed many happy and fun times. When the kids left home, the "boys", Boomer and Sage, became family members for over 15 years. In 2008, Anita and Jim moved into their recently constructed home on the Granite Hills Golf Course near Lac du Bonnet, MB, where they enjoyed retirement. Anita was a loving, gentle person. She was a very talented artist. Winters in Arizona were filled with watercolours, silversmithing, stained glass and wood carving projects. Mom enjoyed travelling, especially the adventurous cruises her and Jim sailed away on. She thoroughly enjoyed their extended sojourn to Australia. Babe, you will be so greatly missed by us all. If friends so desire, contributions may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 in her memory. Celebrations of Anita's life will be held in Winnipeg and Kaslo, in May and June, respectively. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Anita a few years ago while herself, Jim, and Boomer and Sage were staying at the hotel where I was a Room attendant. It doesn't sound like much but she mad a massive impact in my life when I had the pleasure of being able to chat with them while they stayed with us. Anita was always in such high spirits and she never had anything bad to say. She was such an amazing person to meet and is one of the people that inspired me to push myself to better things. I cannot begin to express how sorry I am and how she will forever be in my thoughts. My heart is with her family for sure. RIP Anita C. - Posted by: Kailey (aquaintence) on: Nov 12, 2016

  • Anita presented me with a gorgeous pendant that she made herself after her diagnosis. She was a constant joy in her time at A Port in the Storm. She is and will be missed by all who knew her. A beautiful soul. - Posted by: Debby Lute-Storey (A Port in the Storm) on: Sep 29, 2016

  • So sorry....We just learned that Anita is gone. Our deepest condolences Jim, Heather and James. I have many fond memories of painting with Anita and "drooling over" her wood carvings and other "works of art"....she was, indeed, a very talented and intelligent lady. And I cannot forget cat sitting Boomer and Sage. They inspired me to get our own two "boys". You have had a most horrific few months Jim....losing the boys, your Mom & Anita...in such quick succession. May the rain finally end, and the sun finally shine on you and your family.
