WALTER MUNICK October 23, 1930 - January 28, 2016 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father and uncle Walter Munick, who died peacefully at the Grace General Hospital on Thursday, January 28, 2016. He leaves to join his beloved wife and soulmate Vera; as well as his parents, Magdalena and Eliasz Mniuch; and his sister Mary Phill. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Maria; niece Heather Grimes; and great-nephews, Sean and Lonny Grimes, as well as many dear friends and in-laws. Walter was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 23, 1930, in a little house on Ebby Avenue. He attended Kelvin High School until he found employment at the Canadian National Railway, where he worked briefly with his father before finding permanent employment with Labatt's Brewery, where he worked as a lead hand and then as a shipper and receiver for over 40 years, until his retirement in 1995. During a visit to Oakburn, Manitoba with his sister Mary and brother-in-law Edward Torch in 1952, he met his great love Vera at a small country dance. It was an instant bond, and they married three years later in 1955, amongst a large group of family and friends at the first Holy Family Church in Winnipeg. Eight years later, in 1962, their first and only child Maria was born. In 1966, the young family built a new home in St. James, where Walter lived happily for the rest of his life. Walter was a great socializer, and greatly enjoyed going out for dinner or a movie with family and friends. He loved sports, especially football, and had season tickets for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with Vera for several years. He also had a deep fascination with all things science fiction, which he shared with his daughter Maria. He attended mass regularly at the Holy Family Parish, attending the prayer group and becoming a member of the choir. He firmly believed in keeping informed of the latest news, and read the Free Press daily until his last days. Special thanks go out to the health care providers at the Grace Hospital Intensive Care and 3 South Units, where Walter spent his last days; as well as to the Pasieczka and Marak families for their kindness and gifts of friendship. The funeral service in his memory will be held at the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Darren Kawiuk officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow after the service in the Holy Family Church basement. Following lunch, interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. "You were much loved by all who knew you and will be sadly missed. God bless you and be with you always." For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Walter was a dear friend and neighbour when I lived in Winnipeg, MB in my early years. I often went over to visit and he did the same with us. His family was close to ours as we shared the same Church and other social gatherings in our community. A wonderful and generous kind man who will be missed by all who knew him. - Posted by: William Kynar (Friend and neighbour) on: Jun 03, 2023
