RICHARD KENNETH HAYWARD It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Richard Kenneth Hayward (Ken), on Thursday, January 28, 2016. Ken was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 7, 1928. Ken will be greatly missed by his wife of more than 63 years, Sheila Hayward (nee O'Bryan); daughters, Maureen Fenwick (Duncan) and Darlene Hayward (Sharon); two grandsons, Kieran and Tristan Fenwick; his sister Muriel Green, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Lillian Hayward, and his brother Robert (Bob). Ken spent the early part of his life in Winnipeg's North End. While enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces as a cadet, Ken learned mechanical skills and tank operation at Birds Hill Park. Ken never was deployed; his 17th birthday fell on V-E Day. Ken met the love of his life, Sheila O'Bryan, at a Sunday School picnic in 1946. He spent the next six years courting Sheila, becoming her devoted husband on July 4, 1952 and becoming a devoted father and grandfather in the years that followed. Ken's athletic abilities exceeded those of most of his peers. Despite his modest size, Ken's ability as a hockey player was good enough for him to earn a spot on the Winnipeg Rangers (later renamed the Winnipeg Blackhawks) following the end of the Second World War. Ken's ability caught the attention of the Chicago Blackhawks, who maintained his NHL rights for a period of more than three years. Ken played for several seasons for teams based in Winnipeg, Letellier, Emerson and finally in Thief River Falls, MN. He maintained his passion for hockey, coaching and timekeeping well after his playing days ended. Ken's passion for sports extended beyond hockey as an avid curler and golfer. He was a member of St. Vital Curling Club, curling a game the day before his passing and was also a longtime member of the Teulon Golf & Country Club, looking forward to games with golf pals. Ken was also a passionate fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, taking great pleasure in the team's success last fall. Ken began his professional career at Ackland & Son Automotive before joining Manitoba Telephone System in 1951, working his way up the ranks before retiring from the marketing department in 1983. He was especially proud of earning his Business Administration certificate at Red River College in his 40s. Following retirement, Ken and Sheila enjoyed travelling, visiting the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Portugal, Churchill and Alaska, as well as enjoying several visits to Texas during winters. Ken was a dedicated parishioner of the Windsor Park United Church, having attended service on the last Sunday of his life. The family would like to extend its thanks to the staff at Seine River Retirement Residence for helping enrich Ken and Sheila's lives since 2010, and especially over the last year while Ken resided there on his own. Ken's popularity among the residents will be deeply missed, where his presence loomed so large for the last five years. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2016 at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Dr. in Winnipeg. An interment will follow in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 85 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. I just noticed Ken's passing and I want to convey my condolences. He was always in good spirits whenever we spoke and I loved his sense of humour. I was happy to see him again some 20 years after we moved when I crossed paths with Darlene. I know our family also enjoyed his occasional calls on Christmas day. I wish you all the best and am truly sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Bill McTavish (former next door neighbor) on: Apr 10, 2017

So sorry for your loss. What a wonderful man. Anna (my mom) sat next to Ken in the dining room and he was the first one to welcome her so warmly when she first moved in. Always a smile and a kind word. I got to know Ken through many conversations. The last one was after happy hour a few weeks ago when he asked me if I thought the singer was good. (He thought I should give them a few lessons). He was always ready with a joke, smile, good conversation or quick wit. We will miss him dearly. I promise to sing something from the Sound of Music at the next Seine River concert Ken, just for you! - Posted by: Monica and Anna Huisman (Anna is a resident at Seine River) on: Feb 04, 2016

He was always the first to greet me when I walked in the building for work, even if most of the time it was shouted from across the room! he always reminded me to smile and ill really miss our conversations when he came down late for lunch every Tuesday & Thursday after golf or curling.
