GERALD BASARAB Gerald passed away peacefully on March 5, 2016 after a valiant battle with cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife Louise, his boys Cam (Theresa), Mike (Kristy). Grandchildren Evan, Ashton, Mackenzie and Kalleigh. Stepsons Nicholas, Matthew and Connor. His mother Victoria Basarab, brothers Donny (Leona), Randy (Tena) and sister Debbie (Ed), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father John Basarab, brother Barry and sister Patricia. Born December 1, 1953, Gerald was born in Transcona. A proud Transconian, Gerald loved life and participated in many activities, charities and groups. He was a Mason, a Shriner, belonged to the Optimist Club and was a member of Transcona Game and Fish Board. He volunteered countless hours helping people and assisting charities. He donated stuffed animals to the children of St. Amant and volunteered in the burn unit at Children's Hospital. Gerald started as a "tool and dye maker" he then went on to be employed by CN Rail. Gerald worked 37 years at CN Rail in various positions. He was a Machinist and brilliant at "putting anything together". For several years he also ran a store called "Gerry's Cash and Carry". Gerald loved garage sales and auctions always looking to get a deal on anything. His pride and joy are his two wonderful sons Mike and Cam with his former wife Jill. Gerald had many fond childhood memories at the family cabin with his brothers and sisters at Pointe Du Bois. A loving father, he loved fishing and hunting and loved to take his boys with him. Gerald and Louise built many years of fond memories at their farm in Winnipeg Beach with their good friends the Swirski's. Never to slow down. Gerald is known for always helping others. A kind soul with a big heart. Four times he grew his hair and donated it for wigs to Cancer care. Gerald had an active political career. He ran twice for school board, twice in Civic elections and once Provincial. An honest man with a strong work ethic and an amazing sense of humour. Gerald will be missed by many people. In his latter years Gerald met Louise and from the start of their relationship they were inseparable. Gerald called her "the love of his life". A lover of animals, in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Humane Society of Winnipeg. Thank you to Dr. Christina Kim, Oncologist at the Victoria General Hospital, and to the staff of 6E and 5E at St. Boniface General Hospital. A service will be held for Gerald, Wednesday March 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. A Private family interment will follow in the spring at St. Peter and St. Paul Cemetery, Winnipeg Beach. • We are close friends with Gerry's sons, and as such very good friends of Gerry. He will be sadly missed, he lived close by, so we'd always slow down when we walked by his place, in the hopes he'd see us and share a story, tell a joke, or show us a new "treasure" he had acquired. He was as much a fixture in Transcona as Hi Neigbor Sam or a pink flamingo. Honest, caring, and "tell it like it is", a truly unique individual, his passing is a loss to the entire community. The Hi Neighbor parade will never be the same without Gerry on the sidelines, keeping the local politicians in check. Rest in peace Gerry, and our condolences to Cam and Mike and families. - Posted by: Russ and Amanda Wach (Friends) on: Mar 20, 2016
