Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMICHELENA (LENA) STACEY It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved sister and aunt Michelena (Lena) Stacey on March 31, 2016. Michelena was born in Rama, Saskatchewan to Anna (Sackney) and Wasyl Leniuk on November 21, 1927. She came from a large family of eleven sisters and eight brothers. One sister died in infancy. In the mid 40s she left home and went to Winnipeg and stayed with her sister Katherine and worked as a housekeeper. She meet the love of her life George Stacey while in Winnipeg. After they were married they resided in Winnipeg for several years until 1963 when they purchased the Emerson Hotel. Michelena ran the restaurant where her love of cooking and entertaining turned to a successful Business venture for both George and Lena. People came from everywhere even across the border to enjoy her home cooked meals. Everything she made was from scratch. She was a great hostess both at home and in business. Some evenings she would go to the kitchen and cook up trays of finger foods and serve it in the beverage room for customers to enjoy without charging a cent. In 1979 they sold the Hotel, moved to Winnipeg where they built their home and looked forward to retirement. Unfortunately George took sick in 1981 and passed away January 9, 1982. After George's passing, Michelena worked at a shoe store for a few years to keep herself busy. Through the years her home was always open to family and friends, her cooking was still her greatest passion. Never would you walk away hungry. Her most famous words were "EAT EAT EAT!" In July of 2013 Michelena moved from her home to the Lions Club of Riverside, then the Misericordia Extended Care for a short period of time. She made her residence at Bethania Care Home until her passing. She was predeceased by: her parents Wasyl and Anna; her husband George; sisters Margaret, Katherine, Mary, Dolly, Helen, Doris, and Barbara; brothers Mike, Edward, and Dan. She was always a great source of comfort to me and my family, through the death of my brother and mother. She helped raise my father, her brother, Robert, and would forever after refer to him as her "younger" brother although he was two years older. Every third year, Mom and Dad would pack our family up and we would head out west from Windsor Ontario to visit our extended family . Aunt Lena and Uncle George's hotel in Emerson was always my favourite stop. I recall Aunt Lena making me shrimp for breakfast during one visit. The world is just a smaller , darker place with you not in it. God keep you close. Gail - Posted by: Gail Elizabeth Leniuk (Gans) (Niece) on: Apr 17, 2016
