DEMETRE (JIM) GROUMOUTIS June 9, 1928 - June 2, 2016 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving and dearest father and grandfather, Demetre Groumoutis. Demetre passed away in Winnipeg, on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at the age of 87. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Antigoni (Anastopoulos) Groumoutis; his sons, Leo (Toula) and George (Melina); his daughter Athanasia (Robert); grandchildren, Antigoni, Ianthe and Daphne; nephews, George, Gus and Leo Tsouras; nieces, Susan Danos and Mary Vartsakis and many cherished nephews and nieces, and relatives in San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto and Greece. He was predeceased by his brother Triandafilo, and most recently his sister Panayiota. Demetre was born in Panagitsa, Greece on June 9, 1928. He was the youngest of three children to his parents, Elias and Athanasia (nee Avgerinos). In his early years, he managed to survive both the Second World War and the ensuing Civil War in Greece. He met his wife Antigoni Anastopoulos through friends and family and they were married in 1958. In 1965, he left Greece for Canada in order to establish himself and eventually to bring over his entire family, including his father, in 1968. Over the years, while living in Winnipeg, Demetre worked at Versatile Manufacturing until his retirement. He was very appreciative of the opportunities that were offered to him, grateful for all the friends he made and for the love from his family and relatives. The family would like to thank all the staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital for their loving care and attention. In particular, to Dr. Fatoye and Dr. Sobowale for their support, guidance and compassion, and to Rowena Saure and Regina Johnson for the love and caring of our father. Prayers will be held on Monday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue, with Rev. Fr. Konstantinos Tsiolas officiating. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m., at the same location. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
