EMIL HOMENUIK It's with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our brother, uncle and family leader, Emil Homenuik, who lost his stubbornly fought battle with illness on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, surrounded by family. Emil's ability to bring people together held true to his very last day. His joking nature made everyone want to be around him. Born on September 28, 1943 made him the seventh son in a family of nine children. A move from the family farm near Rhein to Yorkton brought them closer to a golf course Emil's brothers were already dominating by the time he acquired the same passion. Coming by his skill honestly, he won the Saskatchewan Juniors by the age of 15. Golf was at the center of every family dinner discussion and every friendly bet. He was a dedicated member of Rossmere for many of his adult years, playing in the Monday Putter League and in Florida, where he wintered up to his very last year. Golf wasn't his only love. For years, he and his brother Merv travelled the waters of the Great Slave Lake in Yellowknife, NWT on their cabin cruiser, The Heather Anne. His love of catching Arctic char often drew family members up north to join them. Family will fondly remember Emil for his love of cooking. In fact he'll forever come to mind each time we enjoy a plate of perogies. But mostly, we will remember him for his genuine family values. Having never married, Emil's partner in crime through life, and arguably the closest relationship you'll ever find, was with his brother Merv. The bachelor pair treated their nieces and nephews like their children, always encouraging and supporting their education, a high priority for them. After finishing high school in Yorkton, Emil completed his Chartered Accountant's degree at University of Manitoba. This led to a career that wrapped up as a financial controller of the NWT Housing Corporation, when health conditions led to his retirement at 50. In true Emil fashion, he took that opportunity to embrace life, and begin his annual Florida winters with Merv, hitting the golf ball and the beaches. Florida is where he did a lot of his reading. When Emil picked up a book, he rarely put it down until he'd read it entirely. Being that well-read made it challenging to win a debate with him, particularly over politics or history - two of his favourite topics to discuss. Emil is predeceased by his mother Mary, father John and brothers, Tony and Rudy. We would like to thank the caring staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Prayers will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. on Monday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass at St. Andrews Church on Tuesday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m., 160 Euclid Ave. Interment to follow at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My sincere condolences to the family on Emil's passing. As my wife has become involved in genealogy, she has looked at the Yorkton Enterprise for the years we were growing up; this has provided some really fond memories of your golf successes and the competitions we used to have! Wishing you all the best, Russ Aney - Posted by: Russ Aney (friend) on: Jul 01, 2016

  • My sincere condolences to Merv and family over the loss of Emil. He was a good colleague and friend. He will be missed by everyone fortunate enough to know him. - Posted by: Hanne Roemer (Colleague - Arctic Co-operatives Ltd.) on: Jun 29, 2016
