LORNE G. GOODMAN November 23, 1945 - June 30, 2016 With great sadness we announce the passing of Lorne Gudmundur Goodman at St. Boniface Hospital, on the evening of June 30, with his family at his side. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 44 years, Donna; his daughter Lindsey and her husband Don McIntosh of Petersfield, MB; his brother and dear friend, Jack Goodman (Valerie); and his nieces, Karen Goodman-Wong (Henry), Zoe Knopp, Tracy Solomchuk and his nephew Rob Goodman. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Ellen Goodman, and his brother-in-law, Robert Solomchuk. Proud of his Icelandic heritage, Lorne grew up in Winnipeg's West End where he attended Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntyre. As a young man he excelled at hockey and football, and throughout his years he maintained interest in the Bombers and the Jets. Lorne continued his education at United College, the University of Manitoba and Red River Community College. After a brief career in education, he trained as a computer analyst and was employed for many years by Canadian Tool and Die. In retirement, Lorne enjoyed travel, golf and following current political events. Lorne was a true gentleman. Integrity, fairness and decency were his guiding principles; he treated everyone with courtesy and respect. It was Lorne's sincere wish that accessibility awareness be extended to the hearing impaired: design public spaces with an understanding of acoustics, turn down the background noise, and speak clearly. Lorne was very thankful for the compassionate care he received from the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital Pacemaker and Defibrillator Clinic and the Cardiac Care Unit. The family would appreciate donations to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation Cardiac Sciences Program Fund, C1026-409 Tache Ave, Winnipeg, R2H 2A6, or online. A celebration of Lorne's life will be held Tuesday, July 12 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

  • Donna, My sincere condolences to you and your family on Lorne's passing which seems to me terribly premature. I will always remember you as a top student , a professional teacher and talented author to whom Lorne gave very important support. • Dear Donna and Lindsey, I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of Lorne. I will always remember going to your cabin at Falcon Lake and the fun we had, back when Lindsey and I were children - as well as the trip to Gimli our families took together. He was such a good person and so fun to be around. My father often tells the story of when he and Lorne discovered blue cheese and caviar on crackers. I will always remember him. I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to your entire family. Trevi Freeze - Posted by: Trevi Freeze (Family Friend) on: Jul 09, 2016

  • I met Lorne and Donna as we all started our teaching career In Miami. Over the years we were able to reconnect briefly on a few occasions. Not only was he the person described in the previous writeups, I always remember him as the soft spoken man who, when he spoke to you, always had something being expressed from his heart in a most sincere and thoughtful manner. Our thoughts are wth you Donna, and your families at this time. Bob and Marlene Walker - Posted by: Bob and Marlene Walker (friend, colleague) on: Jul 09, 2016

  • We thought about Lorne when Iceland had some great wins in the European Soccer Championships, and it was when I sent an email of congratulations regarding that and other, more important, family milestones that Donna emailed back to tell of Lorne’s setback. We have known Lorne and Donna since 1969 at Miami Collegiate, and though we have for many years lived in different continents, we have kept in touch, with sporadic shared holidays and visits to our respective countries, and of course regular correspondence. We will miss Lorne. He was kind, considerate, always courteous and generous, and he had a lovely wry sense of humour. Lorne loved sport and indeed took money off me at Miami Golf course on our last visit to Manitoba. Lorne’s party piece in the halcyon days of parties was Charlie on the MTA, or Bottle of Wine, and we always associate those songs with him. Lorne and Donna visited us in Ireland several times. On their last visit, romantic that he was, he took us, for old time’s sake to their favourite restaurant in Cashel (Chez Hans). Lorne was indeed a connoisseur who appreciated the finer things in life and liked to share them. Above all Lorne was a true gentleman, and this world is the poorer without him. Fondly remembered by Terry and Eileen McMahon, Cork, Ireland. - Posted by: Terry McMahon Eileen McMahon (Friends since 1969.) on: Jul 08, 2016
