MONICA SMOLDERS 1955 - 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Monica "Mona" Smolders, at the age of 60, on Saturday, July 2, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mona was born in Winnipeg on September 8, 1955. She was predeceased by her brother Paul, father Bernard, and uncles Robert and William. Mona is survived by her mother Wilhelmina "Mimi" (Van Reness), daughter Cora, brothers Robert (Debbie) and Bernard, nieces Jennifer Cornelsen (Curtis), Carla, Jackie, Tante Tina, and her best friend Joanne Grenier (Paul); as well as numerous nieces, cousins and friends. Mona touched the lives of many, including numerous friends and family. Mona's greatest joy was her daughter Cora and took pride in all Cora's accomplishments. Mona enjoyed the outdoors and maintained a cottage for many years. Mona lived in a home in St. Boniface which she worked hard at making warm and cozy. She lived there with her daughter Cora and mother Mimi. Mona also enjoyed gardening, the Arts, Cultures, family history, walks at St. Vital Park, and time spent with family. Mona was very proud of her Dutch heritage. Mona worked as a Psychiatric Nurse at Health Sciences Centre for 30 years. During those years Mona's kind and loving nature was a great asset towards her patients. She also acquired many beloved friends along the way. She will be dearly missed. Rest in peace Mona. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, July 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mona's memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or PETA.   • My apologies for the late posting. I was just made aware this week and saddened to hear of Mona's passing. My sincerest condolences to Cora and all of Mona's family. The last time I ran into Mona was several years ago. I had worked with her many years ago at Health Sciences Center and always enjoyed seeing and speaking with her. She always had a smile for everyone. She was a kind and knowledgeable nurse and genuinely cared about her patients and people in general.   • So sad for your loss of Mona . We grew up together on Vincent Massey Blvd.,and have so many fond memories of our years together. Mona was always kind and a wonderful person to know. A few years ago we had a little reunion with Mona and a few of the Vincent Massey kids. It was such a nice time ,and great to catch up. We will treasure those times,.   • I met Mona through my sister-in-law Joanne when we were in school. She was a wonderful person. We didn't see each other often, but when we did there were always good conversations and many laughs. Joanne always kept me up to date with what was happening in Mona's life.
