NELL RAMSAY April 26, 1925 - July 29, 2016 It is with profound sadness we say goodbye to a beautiful lady who touched so many lives. Suddenly, on Friday July 29, 2016 at the age of 91 years, Nell Angela Ramsay (Ruchkall) passed away, leaving a huge void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. Nell is survived by her son, Michael (Donna); daughter Kathy Hearsum (Paul); grandchildren, Kelli Jeffrey (Mitchell), Reid and Breanne, as well as, great-granddaughter Julia. She also leaves behind her brother Ed Ruchkall (Shirley) and numerous other relatives. Nell's special friend Minh will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her parents Michael and Catherine Ruchkall, brother Walter and husband Bill. Born and raised in small town Selkirk, Manitoba, Nell lived there until she left to work in the big city, Winnipeg. Early on it was evident she was a smart lady, receiving the Governor General's Award for top marks in Grade 11 at Devonshire Collegiate in Selkirk. She then attended grade 12 at the U of Winnipeg. One year after permit-teaching, she knew she was destined to be a part of the education field. Nell attended one year of Normal School before heading north to pursue her dreams. Flin Flon was the chosen town where she taught for five years. She participated in many of the activities offered there and particularly enjoyed curling. It was here where she met her future husband, Bill with whom she was married to for 59 years. Once married, the RCMP sent the newlyweds out east to the Maritimes where Nell continued to teach until the birth of her two children. The family moved again to Halifax where she was able to teach one more year. Then Hello Winnipeg! Over the next few decades, Nell's teaching career really took off! She quickly moved up the administrative ladder, first VP at Sansome School, then Principal at Phoenix School and St. Charles School. Her proudest accomplishment was successfully attaining her Masters degree in Special Education. Not only was Nell a very learned lady, she had a heart of gold and cared for everyone and everything with a selflessness that is hard to come by. She was always sending notes and cards to the many friends she met along her journey of life. In keeping with her desire to help others, Nell became a valued member of the International woman's group, Soroptimists which focuses on helping young women achieve their goals. For her whole life, Nell had a deep religious faith and was a devoted member of the Catholic church, involved in choir, the CWL and worked within the church library. She also played an active roll in the RCMP Veterans' Wives Association and was instrumental in the successful completion of the Book of Memories project. Mom (aka Nana) continuously showered unconditional love on her family. Her special sparkle and never-ending positive nature made the impossible seem possible. We know without a doubt that she was the greatest gift we could have ever had in our lives. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Friday August 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Ave., at Rouge Rd., with Rev. Fr. Robert Polz, presiding. Nell will be buried with her husband in the RCMP Cemetery in Regina, SK at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I met Nell in Seven Oaks Hospital where we were roommates during a hospitalization. She was a pleasant roommate and her friend Min was very kind during that time. I enjoyed playing bridge with her daughter Kathy and husband Paul. And also the apple pie made by her sister-in-law, who with her husband came to visit us. Having Nell as a roommate made my stay more enjoyable than one would expect to have in a hospital. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Margaret Murphy (Friend/Roommate at Seven Oaks Hospital) on: Aug 08, 2016

  • I had the privilege of knowing Nell when she setup of the first Mental Health Library at the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society in the late 1990's. At that time we were located at 1000 Notre Dame Avenue. Nell was a lovely lady, so very knowledgable and kind. My sincere condolences to all Nell's family. - Posted by: Karen Kaplen (aquaintance) on: Aug 03, 2016
