GUS DAMIANAKOS It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch Gus Damianakos on July 30, 2016 at the age of 79. Gus is predeceased by his wife Voula; parents William and Angela; brother Dimitri; sisters-in-law, Aliki and Vicki; nephews George, Peter, Jimmy and George and his beloved grandson Daylan. He leaves to mourn his "honey bunny" Eileen; his son Billy (Tina); daughter Angie (John); grandson Braedan; brother Peter and family in Washington D.C. and Fr. George and family in Greece, along with many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and staff. Gus was born and raised in Gythion, Greece and in 1963 arrived in Canada to marry his first love Voula who was waiting for him. In 1969 Gus purchased the Windmill Lunch on Selkirk Ave. and in the 46 years became a staple of the North End. Gus loved his restaurant. You knew it from the food he served and how he treated others. He would never allow someone to go without and helped many. Hollywood came calling many years ago and filmed many noteworthy movies in the Windmill such as "Shall We Dance", "Capote", "The Big White" and "Horsemen" to name a few. Gus leaves a lasting legacy for all who had the honor of knowing him. With his gentle spirit, infectious laugh and smile he will truly be missed by all. The family would like to thank all who helped us throughout this difficult time. Special thank you to the staff at the Concordia Hospital, your kindness and compassion towards our father and family will always be remembered. Prayers will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave. at Henderson Hwy., followed by a public viewing/visitation between 7:30 8:30 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Konstantinos Tsiolas officiating. Funeral service will be on Friday, August 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 47 Squire Bakers Lane, Markham, ON L3P 3G8 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Suite 200, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg MB, R3L 0K6.

My neighbours and I have missed Gus walking his little white dog down the street every day and are sorry to learn of his death. When I was in my garden he would stop for a brief chat. Gus was one of those neighbours who makes a neighbourhood: friendly, thoughtful, regular and a recognizable figure to everyone. He is already missed. - Posted by: Susan Van Dreser () on: Sep 09, 2016

Our sincere condolences to Gus and his family and friends. The Windmill is a landmark for the North End Community and to the many people who traveled from all parts of Manitoba.Gus knew all of my family and was a friend to all and he used to call me Justice. The Windmill was a very comfortable place that we could go to with Gus , always smiling and taking the time to talk to us. I remember taking my two young children there and we always felt so comfortable and welcomed. Many, many of our Aboriginal families would attend the Windmill along with so many of the community organizations. Sitting in the Windmill and playing the jukeboxes was a good part of my life growing up in the North End. so thank you Gus, Eileen and the staff that were always so inviting. Gus, your smiling face peeking out from your kitchen will definitely be missed by all.
