ANTHONY (TONY) CHARTOFYLAX August 21, 1931 - October 12, 2016 Tony peacefully passed away at St. Boniface Hospital, shortly after midnight on October 12, 2016, surrounded by his wife Anna and children; Nikia and wife Vivian, Maria, Georgina, Nicholas and brother Cosmas. He is survived by many relatives far away as Greece. Anthony was born in Diafani on the island of Karpathos, Greece, the second eldest of nine children. He apprenticed as a bricklayer from the age of 14. He learned to repair diesel engines on his father's boat - a skill he would use later in life. Age 17, he worked in Piraeus (Athens), met our mom Anna Kontaratos, and became engaged. At 19 he fulfilled his military service in the Greek Army. A hard worker all his life, he travelled wherever work was to be found. This eventually led him to Thompson, Canada, where he worked at INCO and many far north construction projects. In 1963, Anna joined him in Winnipeg and they were married. They started their family in Thompson and later moved the family to Winnipeg. Tony became the proprietor of a service station. Eventually coming full circle, he returned to his roots in construction and opened Anthony's Piling Contractors, a successful business of almost 30 years. Our Dad was a very hardworking and generous man. He enjoyed dining out and socializing with friends. He cared for his family and provided for them his whole life. Not being one to take many vacations, his dream of retiring and travelling to Greece annually, was cut short due to deteriorating health. He was loved and will be missed by many friends and relatives here, in the U.S.A and Greece. Prayers will be held on Monday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue, with Rev. Fr. Konstantinos Tsiolas officiating. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, October 18 at 11:00 a.m., at the same location. Interment will follow at Thomson "In the Park". www.voyagefuneralhome.com
