JOHN SCOTT After his sudden but peaceful death at the age of 74 on October 29, 2016, we join family and friends in remembering the many ways in which John Scott touched our lives and how important he has been to so many. Beloved wife of 54 years Bonnie, four children, four siblings, eight grandchildren, and all their partners and family members remember John the Family man - a loving, caring person who always put family first. Generations of students and staff remember John the Educator - a much-beloved teacher who was so passionate about guiding the next generations that his "retirement" as a full-time teacher at Dakota Collegiate was really just a transition to a career as a dedicated and in-demand substitute teacher, which he continued up until his last day. Falcon Lake residents know John the Paper Boy - a man who loved spending time at his cottage and on the lake, but, along with grandchildren and his trusty bicycle, also spent the past 15 summers fearlessly delivering daily newspapers to the South Shore and beyond. Countless teammates, players, and parents remember John the Sportsman - an accomplished athlete, patient coach, skilled referee, dedicated volunteer, and passionate fan in fastball, hockey, volleyball, soccer, and more. Anyone who ever met him knows John the Comedian - a funny, energetic story teller who laughed frequently and whose constant smile was as genuine as it was contagious to all those around him. Whatever your connection to John, you saw him as he truly was - generous, caring, compassionate, coupon-carrying, and optimistic - a kind, hopeful man who spent his life making the world a better place, one interaction at a time. We invite all to a celebration of John's life on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., with a reception to follow. Donations can be made in his memory to the Transcona Memorial United Church Building Fund, a cause very close to John's heart. Just recently heard of Mr. Scott's passing. Like all his students I enjoyed his infectious teaching style and personality. Still fondly recall when we were learning "radicals" and I would say let's not get radical! He was a patient educator who cared about every student. Our family had a cottage not far from West Hawk Lake and enjoyed seeing him at the annual summer pancake breakfast there. Very sorry to hear of his passing - Mr. Scott made an enormous impact on the thousands of students he taught. Condolences to the Scott family. - Posted by: Murray Sisler (Former student) on: Aug 17, 2018

You know it would be a good class when Mr. Scott was substituting that day. Only he had the ability to make precalculus bearable. By simply being in the same room as him, you could feel the light he brought to the world with his indearing smile and kind words. Although I can't say I knew him all that well, I am lucky to say I knew him at all. Prayers go out to his family. - Posted by: Nicole Stumph (Student 2015 Graduate ) on: Nov 16, 2016

I remember whenever we had a substitute in math class, it was always Mr. Scott. Whenever he was announced as a substitute teacher, I was honestly excited because he was someone who had a passion for teaching even at such an old age and made math fun with his pun jokes and unique methods of teaching. He was a kind, gentle teacher that cared about everyone. I'll never forget the one time he even offered to drive one of my friends to work because he had missed the bus. That shows how much of caring, generous man he was. I send my condolences to the family and those affected. - Posted by: Tyler Trautwein (Former Student) on: Nov 15, 2016

Wow! What a wonderful tribute to a great man who has left a lasting legacy. John was certainly one of the good guys of this world and did make a difference in so many ways. His support for and his work as a Trustee for the Elmwood high school Legacy Fund was very much appreciated. John's warm smile and fun loving sense of humour will never be forgotten! It was with profound sadness and shock that we learned of John's passing while we were on the way to the airport. Knowing we would be unable to attend the celebration of this life, added to our heart break. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Bonnie and all of your family as you endure the sorrow of such a great loss. May all your wonderful memories bring you comfort at this most difficult time. With our loving heartfelt condolences, Ken and Linda xz & oz - Posted by: Ken and Linda Boughton (Cousins or as John would say, "Cuz") on: Nov 07, 2016

My deepest sympathy to Bonnie and Family. I remember John when he and my late husband Lorne coached hockey at Maple Leaf C.C. in Transcona in the late 60's and early 70's. We sure did have some good laughs. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. Elaine Lochhead, Calgary, Alberta - Posted by: Elaine Lochhead (Former neighbor) on: Nov 06, 2016

Thanking you for so many memories both on Berens and at Falcon Lake. You will be missed...I am thankful that you were able to live life to its fullest fight to the end. Mrs. Scott, my sincerest condolences on the passing of Mr. Scott. I had the honor of being a student of Mr. Scott's at Dakota Collegiate. I can remember how enjoyable Mr. Scott's class was, and how relaxed his classroom atmosphere was. He would explain, and re-explain things until everyone understood it, and always made himself available to meet with students on his off time. As for his sense humor....I think it was a big part of who he was and that's what made him a teacher and a man who was liked and respected by not only by students but also his peers. Definitely a man who I would say helped me survive high school, and a man I won't soon forget. Rest in peace Mr. Scott, your legacy will live on in the lives and hearts of all you touched. - Posted by: Cory Forscutt (Former student (Class of '88)) on: Nov 04, 2016

Bonnie Holowka Scott: We first read the news in Facebook that your beloved Husband had passed away. Our sincere condolences! I remember going to School with John and you many years ago. In fact we danced at Gym Classes at Dave Thompson, I believe it was Mr. Wolfe, P.E. teacher that made the boys and girls square dance together. Ah, Memories. The Lord promised that we shall meet again in Heaven. God bless us - all. RIP Mr. Scott. Hope you're riding bikes with "The Grand Poobah" in the sky! I was in Derek Paul's (see earlier comment) math class and I'll never forget when Mr. Scott left the class to go consult "The Grand Poobah" on some math strategy. Derek followed Mr. Scott to find out once and for all who this mysterious Grand Poobah was. After a bit, Derek came running back to class yelling "Mr. Scott's The Grand Poobah!" Because he found Mr. Scott alone in the math office! Good times! - Posted by: Lisa (Former student) on: Nov 03, 2016

Mr. Scott was my first home room teacher when I entered Dakota Collegiate back in 1973. Indeed, he was all of the things that were described of him in these tributes. In later life, when he began helping his son and grandson deliver newspapers at Falcon Lake, I enjoyed our many conversations at the door of my family's cabin. Funny though, I could never lose the habit of addressing him as Mr. Scott and he would always correct me saying "Call me John". He was a great educator, but more importantly, a great family man and friend. He has undoubtedly left a huge impact on those whose lives he's touched! Rest easy John. - Posted by: Bill Head (Former Student & Neighbour at Falcon Lake) on: Nov 03, 2016

South Shore Falcon Lake will never be the same without John's smiling face as he rode his bike with a mission; delivering papers to all who awaited. John was always ready and willing to help in whatever way he could. He also helped us promote trail building and maintenance in the South Whiteshell. He was an iconic figure and will be missed! Thinking of you all during this difficult time. Sending our love and prayers Robert and Suzanne - Posted by: Robert & Suzanne Champagne (Lake friends & neighbors) on: Nov 03, 2016

I will always remember Mr. Scott fondly as a warm and tremendously accessible educator. His style of teaching made his class one to enjoy being in and also inspired one to endeavour. His humor was cheesy; lots of 'dad' jokes. Now that I'm a dad and love the 'dad' joke realm, they are even more dear to me, as he was to all who knew him. RIP, sir, much respect to you. - Posted by: Chris Bonin (Former student) on: Nov 03, 2016

I had the pleasure of being in Mr.Scott's classroom during Teemu Selanne's rookie season. It was a very exciting time to be a Jets fan, and no one was more excited than Mr.Scott. It wasn't too difficult to get him talking about the Jets that year, and I believe his enthusiasm and passion for Winnipeg sports teams was infectious, and he had a big impact on a legion of kids like me. I will always remember him as a kind and generous teacher with a wonderfully unique sense of humour. My sincere condolences to his friends and family. - Posted by: Derek Paul (Student ) on: Nov 02, 2016

Our deepest condolences to Bonnie and family. I taught with John at Dakota in the 70's and 80's and always enjoyed his wry and low key sense of humour. I particularly remember his coupon collecting along with fellow teacher Bill Iafolla (the "Iatolla"). He made many friends among the staff and students at Dakota and will not be forgotten. Mr. Scott was my very math teacher in grade 10 and from his classroom I still have great memories and made some friends whom I still see today. Mr. Scott was also my fathers coach at some point and used to love telling me stories of my father running track and field. He also used to tell me he would call my dad if Stacy and I didn't stop talking in his class. lol he was a lovely man and I wouldn't have made it though math that year without his support and jokes and eagerness to teach and see us succeed. Great man. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. Erin - Posted by: Erin Ivory (former student) on: Nov 02, 2016

taught me what a "quarter pounder" was with a 25 cent coin and his fist, worst joke ever... so I line up for a face off at Roland Michener, just before the draw, the referee says "Hi Jay", I look up, surprised to see Mr Scott, and as I am looking at him he drops the puck. Clean win for the other guy - Posted by: Jay Myshkowsky (Student/Victim of his refereeing) on: Nov 02, 2016
