WILLIAM KENNETH CHARLES VIVIAN It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Vivian on January 5, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill passed away peacefully with his wife of 40 years, Judy Vivian (nee Wallace), by his side. Bill was a true family man and will be greatly missed by his wife, and their children Michael (Dianne Holmstrom) and Alissa (Brooks Barteaux). He is also survived by his sisters Dale (Michael Robidoux), Judy, Christina Venderbos, and his brother-in-law Helmut Epp. Also missing him are Judy's siblings Pat (Wayne), Scott Wallace (Donna), and Dawna Wallace (David Brown), as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins who were near and dear to his heart. Bill was predeceased by his sister Sharon Epp. Bill was born on December 6, 1951 to William and Nancy Vivian in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was raised in a loving, and often rambunctious, household with his four sisters, and three close cousins always in the mix. Bill cherished this time in his life and it provided stories that he would carry with him throughout his lifetime. He became an avid sportsman at an early age. He spent much of his young life golfing at Rossmere Country Club and Falcon Lake, as well as being a member of lacrosse, gymnastic, and football teams. He had many fond memories from his time playing with the East Kildonan Lions, the Transcona Nationals, and the Hawkeyes. Bill's family had a cottage at Falcon Lake where he enjoyed scuba diving, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. It was at Falcon Lake in 1971 that he met his wife Judy. They were married in 1976 and moved to Sydney, Australia where they met lifelong friends and began their 40 year dedication to exploring the world together. After returning to Canada they moved back to Winnipeg, purchased their first home, and welcomed Michael in May of 1981. They moved to Kenora in 1983 and Alissa joined the family in December of 1984. Over the next 33 years Bill and Judy raised their family in Kenora while running Perch Bay Resort in the summer months, with Bill working full time at Safeway. He loved to have friends and family join him at the resort for cooking, eating, and storytelling. Animals were a great source of joy in his life and he always had his dog by his side. Over the past 15 years, Bill spent his winter months traveling with his wife and diving in his favourite destinations around the world including the Bay of Pigs, the Great Barrier Reef and the Belize Barrier Reef. Another favourite pastime was to go hunting and fishing with his father and friends. During his last summer, he purchased his dream fishing boat so could spend cherished hours with his kids and friends fishing and visiting during boat rides on the Winnipeg River. The family would like to thank the staff in the Chemotherapy ward at the Kenora District Hospital for their kindness and compassion over the past year and a half. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Oncology Department for their care and attention in the last weeks of Bill's life. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice. A celebration of Bill's life will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2017 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • I just found out about Bill's passing. Was planning a fishing trip, thinking about returning to Perch Bay, and saw the news. I am so sorry Judy and I know this is belated. My parents Tim, Sarah, sister Margaret Ann, her husband Boyd, and myself, Tim junior, went to Perch Bay at least every other year, from when Bill and Judy first opened the resort in the 80's, until the mid 90's when my Dad passed. We used to come up from Kansas City. Always a special time with fond memories. Bill and Judy, and their young kids, made it special because they all are special. With deepest sympathy and prayers ---- Tim Kuhn - Posted by: Tim Kuhn (Former customer and friend) on: Sep 14, 2019

  • Around 1970 Bill had a VW Beetle with over-sized tires. It took us a while before we determined that having too many guys in the back seat caused the fenders to rub the tires and start them burning. Bill was always a positive and fun-loving guy. We have so many fond moments that will remain in our hearts with all the times coming to Perch Bay over so many, many years . The family has always treated us like their own. I have fond memories that I will always cherish about Bill in how he would always share a story or two or three about either the old days or the old days . All while pulling a " treat " out of his pocket for my late dog "Marty" . Your warming and welcoming personality will be greatly missed Bill . We will certainly miss you and think of you always . • My condolences to Dale and Judy on the passing of your brother. I first met Bill when he was training as a meat cutter at Corydon and Stafford store. I believe he told me he wiped out his knee while trying out for the Bombers. Bill was like his father, very out going cheerful personality. Bill Sr would tell me of his times he had with his son when we were discussing business in the Safeway head office on Pacific. He was very proud of his son. Again, I will always have fond thoughts of both of them. - Posted by: colin dederick () on: Jan 10, 2017
