ERIC KIRNER On February 7, 2017, with our hearts full of love and great sadness, our father, papa and great-papa Eric Kirner passed away at Betel home in Selkirk, MB. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Gord (Cathie), Don (Liz) and Tom (Lianne); as well as daughter-in-law Donna Kirner and son-in-law Charlie Stewart; grandchildren, Sarah (Marcel), Allan (Aniko), Ken, Christina, Eric (Lindsay), Kaitlin (Ethan), Stephanie (Kyle), Matthew (Crystal), Michael (Meghan), Aaron, Trina, Marcy (Jason), Jason (Nicole); and great-grandchildren, Diego, Nash, Weston, McKenna, Kayla, Justin, Gage, Lincoln, Gracelyn and Aria. Waiting in heaven to greet him is his wife Mary; his sons, James and Karl; daughter Wendy; his parents, Karl and Anna (Nopper) Kirner, and his brother Fritz and sisters Mina Hummel and Rosa Wehrle. Eric was born on October 10, 1928 in Selkirk, MB. He grew up on the family farm in the area of Little Britian that was part of a settlement of German descendants. He later met Mary while working at the Selkirk Mental Hospital while Mary was training to be a psych nurse. They settled on the original Kirner family farm and they were married for 61 years until Mary's passing. Eric loved Mary so much and was sad when she was gone and it showed in their special bond that he passed two years and one day apart from Mary. Family was an important part of Eric's life. He enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren and every child had a chance to be bounced on Papa's knee to "Hoppe Hoppe Rieter." a German song that the kids loved. Also Papa's pancakes were always enjoyed by all. Eric worked at the Manitoba Rolling Mills for most of his career before retiring to enjoy farming full time. He always farmed part time while working at the mill and he always kept a great garden. While retired he kept busy watching his stocks and travelling the world with Mary which included Germany, Mexico, Hawaii and spending the winter in their home in Arizona. On his travels to hot destinations Eric loved to snorkel and discover the ocean below and he also was an avid amateur photographer. Arizona also became a place for family and friends to visit them. Even though Eric only had a grade nine education he was an avid reader and bilingual (German). He read every chance he got. He liked to keep updated with the world around him whether watching the news or reading his news magazines. He loved to tell stories of the past and what he had learned from reading and he may have seemed to be quiet and liked his alone time, but he also enjoyed to engage in some great conversations or express his opinions and give his two cents. "I go from you gently for it is my time to take the next step in this journey of mine. Don't grieve for me long I've not left you alone for I will be with you in love that we've known. That love is forever and someday when it's time you'll join me again on this journey of mine." Funeral service will be held at St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, 105 Little Britain Road, Lockport on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Henry Laciak presiding. The family would like to send special thanks to the entire staff at the Betel Home for the care and compassion shown to Eric. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eric's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. www.seasonsfunerals.ca

- Posted by: Werner Kirner (Gand-Nephew) on: Feb 12, 2017

My first encounter with Eric was when I was brought to the Kirner house by Karl and with my friend Cathie Watson. It was a zoo. Eric and Mary were in Europe and the house was full of Kirner boys and their friends. Wendy was in charge and had given up. Karl bolstered Wendy's command and got the house reorganized for the parent's arrival the next day. Eric and Mary came home with good cheer and stories. The kitchen was humming and farm work resumed without a hitch. You always felt comfortable in that house and welcome. Eric will be missed and I'm happy thinking that everyone is reunited and having fun. We can feel a little sad but thankful for knowing another life well lived. - Posted by: Donna Kirner (Daughter-in-law) on: Feb 11, 2017

We remember with fondness Eric and Mary inviting us for vacation in their home in Casa Grande. Over a glass of wine we would hear Eric's many life stories that were truly entertaining. Always here him saying, "Mary, when's supper?" He loved her home cooking better than any restaurant. That was true love. His presence will be missed and I'm so glad we got to spend time at the Wehrle/Kirner reunion. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. - Posted by: Al and Thea Ostermann (Friends) on: Feb 11, 2017

In 1956 Cloverdale School stopped at grade 10. I had to go to Selkirk for grade 11 in fall 1956. There was not yet a school bus to take me to Selkirk for grade 11. So my mother Rosa (a widow on the farm) arranged for Eric and Mary to take me in for the winter period of that school year. I do not know but suspect that my mom did not pay them anything for their kindness. I enjoyed staying with them enormously. I had adult conversations with Eric about politics, world affairs, economics, etc. like I had never experienced before. It gave me a knowledge base and confidence that was new to me. I was top of my class, & went to college. Thanks to him! - Posted by: Ernie Wehrle (Nephew) on: Feb 09, 2017
