WALTRAUT RIEDEL-BAUN (WALLY) (née BOEHMLER) Waltraut Riedel-Baun (Wally) née (Böehmler) beloved Mom and Oma passed away peacefully at 88 years of age on February 16, 2017, with her family by her side. She will always be remembered by her son Wolfgang and daughter-in-law Valerie, granddaughter Kirsten Copeland with spouse James and great-grandchildren Liam and Colby, grandson Kevin Baun with spouse Cristal and great-grandchildren Grace and Joshua. Mom was born and educated in Stuttgart Germany. Choosing nursing as her profession, she successfully completed her nursing studies at the University of Tübingen, Germany, where she graduated as the youngest nurse in the top of her class. She resided there until 1958, when she and Wolfgang came to Canada. As her nursing diploma was not accepted here, she continued her studies to attain her certification as a Registered Nurse. Waltraut worked at Health Sciences Center both as a nurse and head nurse concluding her career in orthopedics in 1992. She loved to travel, returning to Stuttgart several times to stay in touch with friends, while also traveling more broadly. Waltraut (Wally) had a large circle of friends that were always there for her, and the family would like to thank them for their kindness and support. She was very blessed to have them in her life. Waltraut was a very talented person. There was not a sweater or afghan she could not make. Besides knitting and crocheting, she had many other interests. She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and learning activities including; stain glass, porcelain doll making and learning Hebrew. The theatre, ballet and symphony were also among her favorites. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Seven Oaks General Hospital and especially the team in the ICU for all the care that they gave our Oma and Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice. A celebration of her life will take place at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Dear Val, Wolf, Kirsten, James, Liam, Colby, Kevin, Cristal, Grace and Joshua, Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you during this most difficult time as well as the days ahead. Due to our friendship with Val and Wolfgang and their family, we had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Riedel-Baun on many occasions. We have enjoyed our conversations with her. We have always admired her internal strength and courage, as well as her dedication to patient care in her lengthy nursing career. Know that we are thinking of each of you and hold you all dear in our hearts. In sympathy and love, Bob and Kathy Hatton - Posted by: Kathy and Bob Hatton (Friend of family ) on: Mar 01, 2017

  • Wally was an amazing and independent women! I am fortunate to have had her as a friend all these years! The only time I witnessed any sadness was when her beloved Greta passed away so suddenly! She was heartbroken and I could do little to comfort her! I will always remember and miss you, Wally! - Posted by: Emmy Read (Good friend) on: Feb 20, 2017

  • So sorry to hear of Wally's death. She was a grand colleague ... could always count on her to be candid and kind. - Posted by: Audrey Hawkins (Nursing Colleague ) on: Feb 20, 2017

  • Mrs. Riedel, (as she was known as Head Nurse on the Orthopaedic Ward of D-5 at the General Hospital) was an incredibly good and efficient Head Nurse, one of the best I have ever worked with! At the time I was an orthopaedic resident and Mrs. Riedel taught me much about orthopaedics but more importantly, how to deal with patients in a kind and humane manner. Indeed she not only taught me but a whole generation of residents and nurses that rotated through her ward as well as providing exemplary care to the patients under her care. It was a pleasure and an honour to have known her and my sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Dr. Merv Letts (friend and student) on: Feb 19, 2017

  • Wally was such a warm and friendly person whom I got to know as part of the Winnipeg Embroiderers' Guild. We shall surely miss her and I am remembering you in my prayers. In recent years it seemed she mostly did knitting, generally with a pair of socks on the go during our meetings. She always had a hearty welcome for everyone and was always concerned about my drive home in the winter. May God comfort you in your loss. - Posted by: Helen Bartel (friend) on: Feb 18, 2017

  • Wally and I worked together many years ago on GD5, Orthopedics at Winnipeg General Hospital. Your Dad also worked with us at that time. My sympathies go out to you Wolfgang and your family. I know all too well what a difficult time this will be. Hang on to your wonderful memories and let them comfort you. - Posted by: Donna Land (work colleague) on: Feb 18, 2017
