PATRICIA FONSECA Patricia Fonseca passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at St. Boniface Hospital with her family by her side. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Susan, Kathleen (Brian), Stephen (Leona), Wendy (Daryl), Brian (Sharon), Margaret, and Mary, her grandchildren: Ivan, Isaac, Jessie, Jullian, Erin, Kelsey, Tanya, Erik, Riley, Keenan, and Billie, and great-grandchildren: Kelly, Tyler, Ivy, Brixton, Jonas and Alex. She also leaves her sister Kay Chiswell (Ted) and her cousin Mary Yake, many family members and dear friends. Patricia was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Albert Fonseca, her parents, Bertha and George Burton, her stepfather Dudley Smallwood and her sister, Margaret Marshall. Mom was born in Winnipeg June 6, 1927 and spent many of her younger years in the Pembina Valley with her Mom's family. She shared so many of those memories with us. It was such a happy time in her life. Mom left school, worked for several years and then met and fell in love with Albert who was taking pictures at her friend's wedding. She spent most of her life in St. Vital and was very proud to be a homemaker raising seven children in our family home on Dunkirk Drive with a beautiful view of the Red River. Mom was a life long learner. She read everything and inspired all of us to pick up books and right up to her last days could be found researching information on her computer. She was avidly involved in politics with our father and fundraising for charitable organizations. Mom loved to sew and kept us well clothed as youngsters. You would also find her knitting mitts and socks that she would donate every Christmas. Mom had a passion for decorating and refinishing furniture and kept our home on the river looking so beautiful. We have so many memories of our Mom working in her lush gardens, a gift she developed with her father at a young age. Music was a huge part of our early years thanks to Mom and our Grandmother. We often crowded around the piano, singing or listening to Mom and Dad harmonizing on old tunes. In her later years, Mom took an active part in the St. Vital Historical Society with our Dad. It was a proud day for her when the Museum moved into the old Firehall at the junction of St. Mary's and St. Anne's Road. Mom's last huge accomplishment was the publication of her book "The Valley", her legacy to her grandchildren. Mom was a huge support to all of us and we are going to miss that support and her joy in watching our accomplishments. She was always so proud of her children. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Thursday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Reception room at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). We are so grateful for the overwhelming support from family and friends at this emotional time and would like to thank the caring staff in Emergency and ICU at St. Boniface Hospital and the first responders. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat's memory to St. Boniface Hospital, the Winnipeg Humane Society, the St. Vital Historical Society or Canadian Wildlife. We love you Mom.
