RONALD PROTEAU It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ron Proteau. Surrounded by his family at his bedside, Ron passed away quickly and peacefully at the Victoria Hospital on the morning of August 16, 2017. Ron is sadly missed and is fondly remembered by his family and network of friends. He leaves behind the following family members to mourn his passing: loving wife Marina; sons Gerald (Joanne), Michael and Marc (Laurinda); grandchildren Jasmine, Whitney, Travis, Haley and Ethan; brother Robert (Wanda); niece Marly (Steven); and nephew Steven. Ron was predeceased by his parents Honoree and Blanche Proteau (nee Lavoie). Born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Ron grew up in the Winnipeg area spending many summers with his brother Robert and relatives fishing, boating and swimming in Rainy River, Ontario. Ron and Marina first met on an ice-skating rink in St. Boniface. They eventually married in Winnipeg and they settled in Windsor Park to work and raise their family. Ron was a passionate father, whether he was leading the campfire singalongs on family camping trip adventures across Canada, teaching us to ride a bike, cheering at graduation ceremonies, or attending minor hockey games, Ron was always there for us, always proud of us, and always made us feel special. Ron worked as a heavy-duty mechanic in a variety of jobs (including a stint on a tugboat servicing remote communities on Hudson Bay) before starting his career with the Greater Winnipeg Gas Company in 1961. He worked in a variety of roles first starting as a field service technician. By the time of his retirement in 1997, he was the supervisor of the corrosion control section for the Centra Gas natural gas distribution systems. Ron had "the knack" of an Engineer. He was self-taught in electronics and for many years was an active member of the Amateur Radio Society. From his "ham shack", Ron would communicate with other radio enthusiast's worldwide. The family fondly remembers the sounds of Morse code, the static of shortwave radio, and the accents of distant voices reverberating from his basement lair. His interest in electronics carried on throughout his entire life where he repaired TV's, radios, and computers for family, friends and neighbours. Ron and Marina's life together was filled with romance. They went on many vacations over the years with themselves, close friends, and family. They explored Europe on several occasions and for many years made regular trips to Mexico and Penticton, BC with a regular group of life long friends. They lived, loved, and laughed their whole time together. In Ron's latter days before his passing, he did what he loved to do every day; attend his morning exercise walks at Vital Mall with Marina, share his wisecracks and stories with friends over coffee, enjoying visits with his children and grandchildren, and repairing computer systems. Ron, you were the love of Marina's life, and you will live in all our hearts forever. We all miss you. In accordance with Ron's wishes, cremation has taken place and final interment will be at a private family only event held at the Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospital Emergency for their kindness, and everyone in advance for their well wishes and kind words during their time of bereavement. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made in Ron's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to: Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery.

To Marina, Gerry, Michael and Marc and your family. Nothing can erase a lifetime of great fun anytime you got near Ron; family camping trips, campfires, times at the lake and any get togethers always ended up in great laughter when Ron got involved. I am stuck with Rumplestiltsken running through my memory and you know what I am talking about. My family is still in shock and all of our thoughts are with you guys. I only wish I had interrupted Ron's mall walks when I saw him go puffing by with his posse to say Hi. We all love you guys and miss him already. - Posted by: Dave Boulanger (Family Friend) on: Aug 27, 2017

A cousin can be like the brother you never had. This was Ron for the first 17 years of our lives. We lost touch for nany years but thanks to the digital age and rare visits with my sis Yvonne we reconnected and stayed in touch with humour and memories. Adieu Ron. A Bientot. Ron, besides being our brother-in-law, was one of our closest friends who lived in our neighborhood. One of our regrets on moving to Ottawa was that of leaving Ron and Marina. We did manage to join them on vacations and we have just reviewed some of those in our picture albums. We will miss Ron and his humour. God bless you Marina. - Posted by: Gilberte Proteau (cousine) on: Aug 19, 2017
