LARRY CHARLES KOVNATS April 7, 1961 - September 5, 2017 After a lengthy illness, Larry passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on September 5, 2017 at the age of 56. He was predeceased by his father Abe Kovnats in 1996. He is sadly missed and survived by his mother Donna, sister Jill, nephew Daniel (Stacey), brother Gordon, sister-in-law Susan, niece Carly (Paul), nephew Dallas and beloved family pets, Trooper and Rocky. Larry was born in Winnipeg and graduated from Windsor Park Collegiate, later obtaining his electrical technologist certification from Red River, a career he enjoyed until his declining health in recent years. Larry was a quiet, kind, unique man. He collected comics his entire life and had a keen interest in science fiction from a young age, happily sharing these pastimes with his nephews and niece. He had a great knowledge of aviation history and loved his Turner Classic Movies channel which helped him pass the time while in hospital. His love for his family was the main focus of his life. He was incredibly proud of his niece and nephews and likewise, they will dearly miss their Uncle Larry. His stoic determination and bravery throughout the medical issues he faced has been a lesson in courage to us all. We offer our sincere gratitude to the many health professionals at Seven Oaks, SBGH and HSC who were involved in Larry's care. Special thanks to Amber and Dr. Oppenheimer of IICU at HSC. Cremation has taken place and a private interment service will be held by the family. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I grew up with Larry in Windsor Park, he and I were great pals when we were in junior high. Larry was and will remain dear in my heart, just a prince of a guy who was an old soul. We would collect comments, talk sci fi movies - took a lot of trips downtown to see movies, buy comics and fanzines. We went to rock concerts - first time I saw Nazareth was with Larry - and Jill and her friends, who probably thought we were pains in the keester. Larry loved his family and he was way wise beyond his years - maybe not in life experience, but - in his empathy for other people's emotions. We drifted apart in high school, other interests, other paths - it happens. Hearing of his passing today cracked a very real part of my soul, because he was a touchstone soul to me as I grew up - just a wonderful guy who I loved dearly. My most heartfelt condolences to Mrs Kovnats and Jill and Gord and all their family. In my heart I know his next journey will be joyous - I am very, very grateful that I knew him and enjoyed such great laugh-filled times with him - I am a better person for having the privilege of knowing him. - Posted by: Terry Phelps (Friend) on: Sep 14, 2017

  • I worked with Larry and would often, on weekends and evenings, take my dog Scar to work with me. She often wandered off and come back with Larry in tow. She knew where he sat and that he would always have numerous dog treats for her. She was a good judge of character and knew Larry was a great guy. He will be missed. - Posted by: Dave Lane (Co-Worker) on: Sep 11, 2017

  • Larry and I were colleagues for many years and his wit and personality are still missed in the office. He was certainly a popular fixture in the office and he will no doubt be missed by everyone who knew him. - Posted by: Brad Peterson (Colleague) on: Sep 11, 2017
