ROY JAMES STEVENSON
Born: Dec 28, 1947
Date of Passing: Sep 05, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROY JAMES STEVENSON The world is a lesser place. It is with uttermost sadness and disbelief that we announce the passing of our husband, father and best friend, Roy James Stevenson, age 69, on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Born December 28, 1947, he was the son of the late Cliff and Una Stevenson. Roy leaves behind a world that he truly loved and in turn all of us in a world minus his infectious attitude, amazing smile and a voice that made you want to jump up and dance. Survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sharon; sons, Jamie (Shyla), Keith (Veronika), Kevin (Corrinna) and four grandchildren, Alex, Aiden, Bella and Addyson who absolutely adored their Papa. Roy enhanced the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him... In addition to his family and plethora of amazing friends, any one of his students throughout his 40 plus years of teaching in the River East School Division would tell you Mr. Stevenson's favourite thing in the world was the sun just like the light and warmth he shone on all our lives. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 14 at 3:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roy's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Our entire family is deeply saddened with the loss of our Roy. We lost a wonderful best friend and neighbour. Our relationship has deep roots with many fond memories to be cherished. Our joint discovery and naming of Kokanee Island in Lake Winnipeg while boating, the snowmobile stomp in a Grand Beach warm up hut in the middle of winter......many fond memories that will continue to bring a smile to our face. Roy, we love you and will always miss you. Sharon, to you and your family, we pledge to always be there for you. Friends forever with love Ken and Audrey. - Posted by: Ken and Audrey Fushtey (Close friends) on: Sep 21, 2017

To the entire Stevenson family, please acccept my deepest condolences on your loss. I had the honour of knowing and working with Roy on the basketball court as an official. Although we had a great time on the court, the fondest memories were the great stories and laughs that he and I had shared. I recently ran into Roy at our neighbourhood grocery store and it wasn't very long before we were laughing and reminiscing once again. He had a wonderful zest for life and it was truly evident that he cherished his time with his family and friends. Jamie, take care of your mother and the rest of your family. Remember all the wonderful times that you shared together…they last a lifetime. Thinking of you at this difficult time. Take care. - Posted by: Cam Moskal (Friend) on: Sep 18, 2017

I also was shocked of Roy's sudden, unprepared for and way before his "plans" for tomorrows. My eldest son Aaron was fortunate to be in Mr. Stevenson's Grade 6 class at Bird's Hill school, close to his "retirement" years.....lol.....like that happened!!! So clearly I recall Aaron coming home saying what a cool/neat teacher Mr. S. was, and would tell me about what so impressed him. More recent years our paths would cross when (and also you Sharon) subbed at Sun Valley, where I was a speech and language EA and we'd exchange sunny plans of family adventures. No words can express your families pain. May Grace and all your loved ones hold you, walk with you, laugh with you and cry with you as healing unfolds. Fondly, Marion Desilets and Aaron - Posted by: Marion Desilets (Parent of a student of Mr. Stevensons ) on: Sep 14, 2017

The world has definitely lost a great man with Roy's passing. So very sad. Roy always had a ready smile and a hug upon meeting. He was the first person to welcome me to Bird's Hill School when I came there and I left that day with such a warm feeling. That never changed with Roy around - always smiling, laughing, joking and taking things easy. A great teacher, friend and family man. I will never forget the day we had a staff barbecue at my house and with all the people going in and out, my house soon filled with flies. I have a wonderful picture of Roy holding the hose from my vacuum sucking up flies from the ceiling and walls - he was the only one tall enough to reach that far! My deepest sympathy to Sharon and family. Roy will forever be missed. - Posted by: Shirley Sokol (Colleague in RETSD) on: Sep 14, 2017

It has been over a week now since we got the phone call on that Tuesday and I still Cannot believe it. Roy knew me from the moment I was brought home from the hospital 39 years ago and was a big part of mine and my families life ever since that day in fact so close I have the HONOR to call him my God Father. I will always remember that voice that could fill a room and brighten it up instanly or the infectious laugh. Many nights watching him sing well Bob played the piano for everyone. My fiance and our 2 girls were so very lucky to be in Revelstoke just 6 weeks ago and got to spend 2 days and nights with Roy and Sharon and Keith and Alex enjoying great meals together on the deck with lots of Great wine and tons of laughs and stories that we will forever cherish. Being able to spend the afternoon with him just 2 short weeks ago at there home was just another blessing in disguise for us now that this tragic ending has come. Roy you played a huge part in my life as do Sharon and the Boys. May you be at peace and may your family one day be able to enjoy your memories with both a smile and a tear. I will Love you Always and will miss you forever!!! - Posted by: Darcy Tkach, Courtney MacEachern, Ireland Tkach, Evelyn Tkach (God Son) on: Sep 14, 2017

Sharon,we cannot even believe this has happened. Roy loved life and was able to talk to anyone to make them laugh and feel good. He once told me as we drove to a basketball game that you, Sharon was the best thing that ever happened to him. I can remember that huge grin and smile he had when he got that convertible to drive. Our hearts are saddened. Our sympathy to you and your boys and their families. - Posted by: Glenn & Joyce Matsumoto (Friend) on: Sep 13, 2017

I had the best memories with Mr Stevenson . I was his first class at Robert Andrews . I figure he was 24 when I was twelve . The one thing I remember notably was him singing word for word " The Cover of the Rolling Stones" song by Dr Hook. This was on a boring school field trip on a yellow bus making the trip more fun and enjoyable as was his way . I was happy he taught my daughters Rowan and Laila in his later years . Many great memories of Mr. Stevenson. One notable memory that continues to make my wife and I smile was his karaoke rendition of 'Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)...He was one of those dad's that all of us looked up to, respected and genuinely looked forward to seeing at any event. May the memories of this great man live on through each and every one of us. Let us all toast Mr. Stevenson for a life well lived. Far too short but one that left many lasting impressions on those whose lives he touched! - Posted by: Mike & Joelle Ruthig (Longtime Family Friends) on: Sep 11, 2017

Mr. Stevenson was our gym teacher at Robert Andrews in the mid-1970's. What a great teacher. His smile says it all. I ran into him the odd time at Costco and was impressed that he remembered me by name and we talked easily even though he had been my teacher 35 years ago! My thoughts and prayers to his family. I was very sad when I learned of Roy's passing. My fondest memories of Roy and all the Stevensons when I was very young, the Stevensons would rent a cottage at Winnipeg Beach in the summer and my grandmother and I would take the train there for a week. We had a great time at the amusement park , the boardwalk and connessions. Of course, Roy was always with us and having as much fun. He was always full of laughs and never left anyone out. He will surely be missed. - Posted by: Dan Mason (2Nd. cousin) on: Sep 10, 2017
