ABRAM GIESBRECHT 1928 - 2017 Peacefully, Dad left us on November 15, 2017, at the Bethania Nursing Home, at the age of 89. He leaves behind his daughter Shirley Baillie; son Harry (Linda) Giesbrecht; grandchildren Kevin (Jenn) Baillie, Candace Nield (Dewayne Garrow), Mathew Giesbrecht and Steve (Britni) Godkin; great-grandsons Cullen Nield, Kyle and Dawson Baillie, Logan and Tannor Garrow, Chase Godkin; one great-granddaughter Bria Godkin; and adopted great-grandsons Kaleb and Quintin Link (Darcie and Vince). Dad was predeceased by his wife Helen (2013); three stillborn sons; son-in-law David Baillie; his parents Henry and Eva Giesbrecht; sisters Esther (Earl), Verna, and brother Harry Howard. Dad was born September 12, 1928 in Rosenort/Altona, Manitoba. In November 1948, after a brief courtship, he married Helen (Harder) in Ontario and moved back to Manitoba to raise their family. He worked for the City of Winnipeg, driving sanitation trucks and street sweepers and retired September 18, 1993. In retirement he loved to tinker and fix things. If family or neighbours needed something, it was "let's go to Abe's place, he might have what we need." Dad never tossed out anything he might use because it just might come in handy. Dad's life was his family and he greeted you with a firm handshake. He also loved to tease the grandchildren if they had a spanking at school yet. Dad was a man who often spoke his mind and you always knew where you stood with him. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

  • I was crushed to hear of Uncle Abe’s death. Our hearts go out to you Shirley and Harry and families. I always thought of Uncle Abe and Aunt Helen as my Father and Mother. Uncle Abe was my mother’s brother and we visited back and forth from Ontario to Manitoba while I was growing up. If it hadn’t been for Uncle Abe I have no doubt that I would not be here today. Uncle Abe and Aunt Helen rushed me to the Winnipeg Sick Kids Hospital with a very high temperature which turned out to be Polio. My family had just moved to Manitoba from Ontario in 1964 and we were all staying with Uncle Abe and Aunt Helen while mom and dad looked for a place to live. I owe my life to you Dad (Uncle Abe) and wish that I had been in a position to visit more often over the years and especially when you got sick. My husband Gary and I missed your funeral but our thoughts and hearts were there. I have no doubt that Aunt Helen, Mom, Grandma and Grandpa were there to greet you. I love you dad and will miss you terribly! I will hold you in my heart forever. Heidi and Gary - Posted by: Heidi and Gary Bolibruck (Neice) on: Nov 25, 2017

  • All of us at The Movement Centre are saddened to learn of Abe's passing. He was a part of a group of guys....jokingly always referred to as "the old guys"... who came for conductive education therapy at our Centre. Our reception area would lighten up when this grouping of men - of which Abe was a part of - would arrive. He, and the others in his group, stopped coming for therapy - about a year ago now. Abe - you will be missed - and to Harry - we offer our condolences, and trust that all of the memories you have will help you during this journey. -Margy and all of the staff at The Movement Centre - Posted by: Margy Nelson (The Movement Centre's Executive Director) on: Nov 20, 2017

  • Shirley and Harry, I am very saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. He was a great neighbour to my parents for almost 40 years and always had a big smile and greeting whenever he saw me. God Bless - Posted by: Rod Hintz (neighbour) on: Nov 18, 2017

  • My deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes out to Harry, Linda, and family. It is never easy to lose a parent, no matter how old they are or if you were expecting it. We lose a little of ourselves when a parent passes away. I hope one day your feelings of sadness will be replaced with many fond memories of someone very special. - Posted by: Dianne Kennedy (friend) on: Nov 18, 2017
