ANTONIO ROMEO November 17, 1920 November 17, 2017 Peacefully, at Grace Hospital, Antonio Raffaele Fiorello Romeo passed into eternal rest on the day of his 97th birthday. Antonio was born on November 17, 1920 in Amato (Catanzaro), Italy. In 1945, following his service in the Second World War, he married the love of his life, Angela Pingitore. They had four children: Serafina, Giuseppe (Joseph), Giovanna (Jo-Anna) and Francesco (Frank). In 1954, Antonio left his young family in Italy and joined his sister Gaetania in Montreal, where he stayed for seven years to work and prepare a new life for his wife and children. Although he loved the cosmopolitan character of Montreal, in 1961, he decided to join his brother, Francesco, in Winnipeg, where his family would reunite with him in 1963. In Winnipeg, he began a new career as an autobody repairman and car painter with Dominion Motors, where he stayed until his retirement in 1982. Upon his retirement, his time was spent enjoying his family, his garden, trips back to Italy and daily visits to Grant Park Shopping Centre. He loved going to the mall to socialize with his friends, just like he would in the piazza of Amato. Antonio was predeceased by his parents: Giuseppe and Giuseppina; his siblings: Maria (Bernardo Scarpino), Carmela (Giuseppe Scarpino), Gaetania (Angelo Fiorentino), Serafina, Tommaso (Concetta) and Francesco (Giuseppina); his son-in-law Francesco Cappellano; and many other members of his extended family. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 72 years, Angela; his daughter Serafina (Francesco Cappellano), in Italy, his son Joseph (Maria Girimonte), daughter Jo-Anna (Aldo Guerra) and son Frank, in Winnipeg. Nonno will be remembered with love by his grandchildren: Pietro, Antonio (Katia) and Dario (Rosanna) Cappellano, in Italy, and in Winnipeg, Francesca (Frank Gallo), Angela (Marceli Walczak), Angela (Christopher Kuzminski) and Anthony (Gillian). He will also be remembered by his great- grandchildren, who referred to him affectionately as Nonno Apple for the beautiful apple trees in his cherished garden: Cristian, Mattia and Nicoló Cappellano, in Italy, Matthew and Daniel Gallo, Elaina and Andreas Walczak, Michael Kuzminski and newborn Joseph Romeo, in Winnipeg. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the homecare workers and staff, nurses and doctors, in particular Dr. Joshua and Dr. George, at Grace Hospital for all their care and compassion. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., with Father Sam Argenziano Celebrant. Prior to mass, condolences can be offered to the family between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Entombment to follow at Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Amant Foundation, 440 River Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 3Z9 or contact 204-258-7052. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Francesca and Frank Gallo, Angela and Marceli Walczak, Angela and Christopher Kuzminski, and Anthony and Gillian Romeo.
