Sadly, I just learned of Doug's passing and wanted to give My deepest condolences to his family. He was My family as well as My cousin Cheryl was the widow of Don Fox, his brother in law. I worked with Doug at CN Rail for many years in Symington Yard at the diesel shop unless I was working in the Transcona Shops. He was a very gentle guarded soul until he felt comfortable with you which was fine with Me. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and willingness to help others, even if it was just a Tylenol if someone had a headache. I especially enjoyed his excitement when he'd talk about star wars. I once told him that I only enjoyed the original star trek with Captain Kirk, spok, bones, and the gang, and he got so excited! He started telling Me all about the other Star treks that I was missing out on. When My late husband and I retired, I remember My last shift with Doug. He said "here Pops", and handed Me a card and a bick pen as a joke since I was always borrowing his pen. That smile and sense of humor will be truly missed and will stay with Me forever. - Posted by: Cathy Smaha (Popsie) (Co-worker and friend) on: Jan 06, 2024

I have so many things to thank Doug for - thanks for being one of the first people to welcome me to my first Star Trek Winnipeg meeting, thanks for being such a good friend, thanks for all the times we spent just hanging out, thanks for introducing me to my lifelong gaming addiction, and I'm sorry that we did not stay very close over the years. Safe journey, my friend...we will see each other again when the fates allow. - Posted by: Mark Murray (Friend) on: Dec 01, 2017

I was quite saddened to learn of Doug's passing. He was a vital part of Star Trek Winnipeg, and contributed much to the fun and sense of family that I felt there. He could always be counted on to help and support our events and efforts to promote the club with energy and enthusiasm. We would only see each other from time to time after I moved on from the group, but I always appreciated seeing him and knowing that he was happy, enjoying doing all that he did for Fandom. He will be missed by many. - Posted by: Shandi Strong (Friend) on: Nov 29, 2017

I always remember Doug teasing Lorene and I about our escapades when we were at MacIntosh and wanting him to participate in our paint ball hunts....smartly he never participated preferring to read his collection of comics. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Ken.... The Meeks - Posted by: Diane Meek (Friend of the Family) on: Nov 29, 2017

Doug and I were very close over the last decade, spending many hours watching sports or movies. We also went on book store binges, visiting several shops a day, scouring the shelves for the good stuff. We also sold books together at flea markets and other sales events. His kindness and generosity , and his easy going nature will be a steady influence in the times to come. Rest easy, my brother of a different mother.. - Posted by: John Speelman (best friend) on: Nov 28, 2017

So many fond memories... Doug was a gentle soul who was always ready to lend a hand and to make things better with his assistance and his friendliness. (I smile when I recall how many hours he spent on the phone with me back in the 1980s, enthusiastically walking me through the plot of "Elfquest" -- a series I love to this very day.) He will be greatly missed at Keycons to come. May he rest in peace, and may his family find solace and healing through the tributes of his friends. - Posted by: Laurie E.
