HELENE GERTRUDE LAWTON (nee HEINSOHN) September 10, 1931 - February 6, 2018 Helene, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, auntie and friend, passed away peacefully on February 6, with her family by her side. Her legacy is the love she so generously shared and the indelible impression she left upon so many whose lives she touched personally and professionally. Helene leaves behind to miss her forever her beloved husband of 60 years, James (Jim); daughters Barbara, Kathryn (Jeff Curtis), Susan (Chris Rebizant); son David (Mary); sisters Charlotte Stech and Ruth Busch, as well as her grandchildren Evan (Sarah), Tanner, Jessica, Hunter and Sarah, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Johann and Augusta Heinsohn, and her siblings Betty, Ewald, Wernie, Edie, Ellie and Hertha. Helene was born and raised in Langenburg, SK on the family farm. She eventually moved to Winnipeg and graduated from the St. Boniface School of Nursing in 1953. Helene continued to work at the St. Boniface Hospital on a part-time basis until 1991, when she retired as Supervisor, Nursing Services. Her compassion, dedication, kindness and skill earned her a reputation for nursing excellence second to none. In 1958, Helene married Jim and they bought a house in Windsor Park that is to this day "command central" for the Lawton family. For nearly six decades, Helene took advantage of every possible opportunity - from holidays to birthdays to Sunday dinners - to prepare a fabulous meal for her family. Her grandchildren were particularly special to her. She loved spending "grandma time" with them, baking Christmas cookies, decorating Easter eggs and finding hundreds of other ways to have fun and laugh together. The family is sincerely grateful to the caring, dedicated staff of Golden Links Lodge, where Helene resided the past few years. In keeping with Helene's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Flowers are gratefully declined, but if friends so desire, please consider a donation in Helene's name to Golden Links Lodge, St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation or a charity of choice. "A mother holds her children's hands for a short time but holds their hearts forever." We love you Mom. • Dear Jim, Barb, Sue, Kathy and Dave, I am so sorry to hear about Helene's passing. I was glad that I was able to visit her at St B. We spent our time happily reminiscing about the old Blackberry days. Helene was such a great cook and was like a second Mom to me in many ways. I will always remember the many great times that we all shared. Sincerest condolences, Lisa - Posted by: Lisa Manning (Family Friend) on: Feb 14, 2018
