RUTH WALDRON SIMMONS (nee MOONEY) Peacefully, February 23, 2018, at the Maples Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, at the age of 93 years, Ruth passed away. Ruth was predeceased by her brother Robert, her beloved husband Norman, her nephew Peter Mooney and her niece Joan Eustace (Mike). She is survived by her son Kent, daughter-in-law Liz Dillon, sister-in-law Constance Mooney, nephews, Bill (Sally) and David Mooney, nieces, Shirley (Frank) Leech and Norma Simmons, nephew Doug (Peggy) Simmons and cousin Lori Davidson. Born and raised in Ottawa, Ruth obtained her nursing diploma from the Kingston General Hospital where she met Norm, also from Ottawa, studying engineering at Queen's University. Norm and Ruth were married October 22, 1949 at the All Saints Anglican Church in Westboro. Ruth graduated from the Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Ottawa in 1968 and then in 1972 returned to the UOttawa to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing. Ruth worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses for several years before joining the federal government. She retired from the Drug Reaction Branch in 1989. Members of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, both Norm and Ruth enjoyed playing golf immensely. A highlight for Ruth in a long golfing career was a hole in one. Travelling was also a pastime they enjoyed. One of their favourite destinations was golfing at Jekyll Island, Georgia. An avid gardener and bird watcher, Ruth was also a master bridge player. At the end of 2015, Ruth moved to Winnipeg to be near her son and daughter-in-law. Kent and Liz would like to thank the staff at the Maples Nursing Home for their kindness. It was truly appreciated. As per Ruth's wishes, cremation has taken place. (Desjardins Funeral Home). A celebration of Ruth's life will take place in Ottawa at a later date at Tubman's Funeral Home (Nepean) with interment to follow at Capital Memorial Gardens.
