JAN (JOHN) PIOTROWSKI After 94 years of life, we sadly announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his wife Stella; parents, Nicholas and Pauline; brothers, Joseph and Wilhelm; and sister Alice. Remaining to forever cherish John's memory are his children, Joe (Wanda), Jennie (Patrick) and Mary (Edward). His most cherished grandchildren, Justin (Cindy), Andrew (Crystal), Stefan, Stacey, Jillian, Victoria and Paul; and seven great-grandchildren. Dad was born in Nowosiolki, Poland. At age 16, Poland was invaded by Germany and Russia and his family was separated. Our father then worked in a war camp in Siberia. After being released, as a refugee their passage took them to Iran, Iraq and Palestine where he joined the Second Polish Core. Under the command of the British Eighth Army and he fought in Italy/The Battle of Monte Cassino and Battle of Bologna. After the war, he secured passage to Canada and worked in the farming industry in Ontario. Once arriving to Winnipeg, he worked for the Department of Parks and Recreation for the City of Winnipeg until he retired in 1986. He was a proud member and held an executive position with the Royal Canadian Polish Legion Branch #246. He was a frequent blood donor. Dad had a passion for gardening, barbequing, entertaining, fishing and the ability to fix anything. In his retirement years, Dad enjoyed travelling to many destinations in the world and his favourite spot was Hawaii. He loved spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren in which there was always great food and many laughs. The Polish Heritage was important to him and always kept close to our hearts. He was a proud usher and member at Holy Ghost Church. The qualities of kindness, patience, gentle soul and courage described him. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Avenue with an Oblate Father presiding. Interment will follow in the Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Middlechurch Nursing Home staff who took wonderful care of our father over the past five years.
