DR. NATHAN HAROLD WERNER Nate was born in 1929 and died March 21, 2018. As a young man he was an outstanding student, graduating from the University of Manitoba Medical College in 1953 and going on to study ophthalmology at New York University, Bellevue Hospital. In 1954, he married Brenlee Werner (nee Brotman) and they moved back to Winnipeg in 1956. He opened his practice on Hargrave Street, where he saw patients for 50 years before his retirement. He was a fixture at Eaton's Grill Room, eating his lunch there daily, reading the Jerusalem Post; all of the staff knew him, as well as many of his patients who saw him downtown and thought of him fondly. He was athletically talented; first playing badminton, then switching to tennis and golf. He always gave lessons to everyone he played with, even if not required. He was a keen student and a natural teacher about many philosophic and athletic pursuits. He wanted to understand all things and to be able to explain them. He was brilliant, and he knew something about everything. In 1972, Nate, Brenlee and family moved to Israel for a year where they all learned to appreciate Israeli life, learned how to speak Hebrew and made many friends. His family is grateful for the gifts he gave them about curiosity, learning and the value of knowledge. He loved classical music and he and Brenlee learned to play the guitar and sing their favourite songs of the 1960s together. He was very proud of his daughters: Shelley and Janet, both of whom distinguished themselves in artistic endeavours. He has two grandsons, Jonah Simmonds and Lewis Robinovitch. He taught Lewis how to sink a basket and some extraordinary moves in golf. On visits to Palm Springs, Lewis and Nate could be seen practising on the third hole in front of the condo at dusk. Nate and Brenlee were constant companions, on winter vacations and in the summer, at Falcon Lake, where he loved playing tennis and at the Toniata hill top cabin with the spectacular view where he could see for miles. He said it changed the gears of his mind. The funeral was held March 23, 2018 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Rabbi Matthew Leibl led the service in song and with a fitting tribute to Nate. Shiva will be held at 11C-221 Wellington Crescent on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, March 25, 26, and 27 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
