JACK BERGER Jack Berger was born in Yugoslavia on November 7, 1924, and passed away in Winnipeg on March 26, 2018, at age 93. Jack met Helga at art school in Bamberg, Germany, after the Second World War. They immigrated to Canada and were married in Steinbach, soon having two sons: Jack Jr. and Michael (Anne). Jack was a stone mason by trade, but started work in Canada at the Carillon News in Steinbach. He also painted oil portraits and was a wedding photographer, and in 10 years they moved to Winnipeg and started Jack Berger Limited (a graphic arts trade plant). Jack was on the leading edge of colour printing, and grew the business to over 60 employees in his own five-story building downtown. He was very mechanical and creative, and spent most of his life inventing and building things in his spare time. He was very independent, and stayed in his own home until his death, thanks especially to the great support of his niece Emily, Manitoba home care services and Katcher Services. Jack was always very positive and even to his last day, when asked how he was doing, answered "fine". Jack is survived by his two sons, his niece Emily (JP and family), nephew Hans (and family), dear friend Lorne, and all other family and friends. As per Jack's wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Jack hired me right out of school as an apprentice in 1969. Under his guidance and his nephew Johnny Schmitz’s mentorship I became a journeyman ‘color cameraman’. After John’s sudden passing I was honored when he asked me to run the Color Department. It was big shoes to fill. Working for Jack left a very positive impression on me personally and professionally. He taught me life skills and work skills that I practice to this day. When I was in Winnipeg a few years I made a point to visit him and tell him that. Condolences to Jack Jr, Michael, Emily and the rest of Jack’s family and friends. I posted a tribute on my Facebook page with a few old pictures. - Posted by: Neil Mackie (Former employee ) on: Apr 21, 2018

  • Our family immigrated to Winnipeg in 1967 from South Africa and the Berger family were incredibly kind, generous and compassionate to us when my father fell seriously ill very shortly after arriving here. My father worked many happy years side by side with Mr. Berger and all the gang ....I have fond memories of the family Christmas parties at the Viscount Gort in 70's with Mr. Dressup...! Thank you. May you rest in Peace.... - Posted by: Louise Lage (nee Williams) (Daughter of former employee, George Williams) on: Apr 07, 2018

  • I was fortunate to have Jack share stories with me about his life and I enjoyed hearing them. His positive outlook is truly an inspiration to me. His genuine care and concern for others has been and should be an example for us all. My life is richer for having known him. RIP Jack I’ll miss our laughs together. - Posted by: Michelle Stanton (Friend) on: Apr 07, 2018
