MARK KLAASEN It is with sincere sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Klaasen, at the age of 42. Mark was born in Winnipeg on September 3, 1975. He was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Marg Klaasen. Mark leaves to mourn his son, Shelby Houston-Klaasen; Dana Houston-Bishop (Shelby's mom); his brothers, Gerald (Cheri) Klaasen, Eric (Kathleen) Klaasen; and his niece, Amanda. Mark will also be greatly missed by Lorna his dear friend and his many other lifelong friends and coworkers at Refrigerative Supply. The most important part of Mark's life was his son, Shelby. The love he had for his son was apparent to all. He talked often of how proud he was of the man Shelby had become. In recent years, Mark developed a passion for golf and served on the Board at the St. Boniface Golf Club. He was known for his outgoing and charismatic personality. His golf family would always know Mark was on the course, as they could hear his boisterous laugh three holes away. A Celebration of Life in honour of Mark will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, 7:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Golf Club, 100 Youville Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Mark's name to Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba.

Dear Family and Friends, Yesterday evening the sad news of Mark's decease finally reached me. My deepest sympathies are with all of you. Mark and I never actually met, only once, when he was still a baby during a visit of the family to the Netherlands. Nevertheless, because of the family ties, I feel strongly connected. Mark's father, Ben, knew me as a child and together we made several nice trips (like swimming in the Dutch river IJssel near Zutphen). After his immigration to Canada we managed to meet several times; a fine guy. I hope you'll find a way to cope with the loss and your grief. Sincere condolences, Nico Dutch Cousin (Mark's father Ben and my father Bertus were brothers) - Posted by: Nico Klaasen (Cousin (Holland)) on: May 15, 2018

My deepest sympathies are with you and the rest of the family. I was trying to get in touch and see how everyone was doing and while searching the net I came across this sad news. I think the last time I saw Mark, he was about 10 years old, always smiling and running about. Sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Margaret C. (Cousin) on: May 07, 2018

Our sincere condolences to the family. In the short time we knew Mark it was evident that he was an incredibly kind soul. When we moved into our home, Mark was so generous and nice, always offering to help out, or lend us anything we needed. We will miss his big smiles and waves every time we are out front or driving down the back lane! - Posted by: Shawne and Oumar Faye (Neighbor) on: Apr 24, 2018

Mark was the kindest, smiley-est member I worked with, so patient, so friendly. The kind of man he was was clearly evident in his son, Shelby, the most polite Junior I've ever served. This speaks volumes to the amazing father and man he was. He will be missed, my love to his whole family, especially Shelby. My prayers for everyone who knew Mark. They were lucky to have met. Memories continue to come to mind of Mark since his passing. Most involving a lot of partying, lol. We had so many good times! The others are when we were 13/14 yrs old! I remember Mark trying to teach me how to play the drums. He was amazing and I was horrible. But he was a good teacher and was patient with me. He introduced me to Led Zepplin, Metallica, Motley Crüe! He truly had a lasting impression on my life! That to this day Dyer Maker still makes me think of us 4 kids hanging out with one another! He was an awesome guy! He will be missed! - Posted by: Raena Chammartin (Friend) on: Apr 21, 2018

As a coworker many years ago I remember his ambition to succeed. He willingly trained me at his position so that he could advance on. Hard working man. Huge smile, always funny, loved his rock. Glad to hear he fell in love with golf! Sad news for sure. - Posted by: Roland Kolbauer (Coworker ) on: Apr 15, 2018

I first met Mark through work when he joined RSL. His humour and smile were always infectious, and he was very focused on keeping his customers happy. When we became closer I had the pleasure of golfing with Mark at both St.Boniface & Rossmere and saw his game progress year after year , but no matter the score, Mark always had fun! I will miss seeing you at the branch and pray that your family will find peace during this difficult time. Rest In Peace my friend, catch you on the back nine! - Posted by: Cal Gogal (Friend/Customer) on: Apr 10, 2018

I was/am a friend of Gerald for many years, so therefore I was also a friend of the family. My Happiest memory of Mark was when he was 14 when he and 3 friends wanted to go see the AC/DC concert. None of their parents wanted to take them, but Mark remembered they were/are my favourite band. So he asked if I would take him and his friends. So after phone calls from the parents, I (21 at the time) was chaperoning 4 teenagers to the concert. I think I shocked them because I knew all the words. We had a great time. And I will continue to cherish this memory, and many others. Sad to see your journey end so young. My heart goes out to everyone who knew you. - Posted by: Bonnie McKechnie (Family Friend) on: Apr 09, 2018

I’ve known Mark since he was a lil guy. He used to hang around with my brother. I ran into him not too long ago while grocery shopping and lucky for me we got to catch up for about 45 min or so right there in the aisle! He told me about his son, his work, his struggles. We hugged and exchanged numbers. But after that we only text. I regret not making the time to get together. I’d like to express my sorrow to all of Mark’s family and his friends. He truly was a great guy. May you all find comfort in your good memories. Hugs to all. - Posted by: Tara Fillion (Knew Mark since he was a lil squirt) on: Apr 09, 2018

Mark was one of my longest and closest friends. I spent 30 years hanging out with Mark from hunting to fishing to camping trips snowmobile adventures. As we grew busier with family and kids we always made time to catch a concert together at least a couple of times a year. I will miss my friend dearly his laugh and humour was so contagious. Rest In Peace Mark. You were so much more than the pain you felt. Your buddy Mike - Posted by: Mike Johnston (Friend ) on: Apr 07, 2018

My heart aches for your whole family, Mark. Especially Shelby. I can still hear your laugh and often think of our trip to Pine Falls, fishing. You were so proud when I caught my 6 pound pickerel and I giggle at the thought of the “fish pants” you made out of the fillets. You were an amazing dad to Shelby and your eyes always lit up when you spoke of him. You will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. Until we meet again my dear old friend. - Posted by: Melanie (Former colleague and old friend) on: Apr 07, 2018

We met Mark on the golf course and really got to appreciate what a wonderful human being he was. His outgoing personality and infectious laugh made him such an endearing character. He never failed to ask how we were and his kindness to others was unparalleled. The world is a much poorer place now that he is gone. He will be missed! Sending my deepest sympathy to the Family. Mark and myself met through our boys going to school together. Many years of seeing his son Shelby and my son grow up and graduate. Shelby is one heck of a fine young man. His Dad Mark, very genuine and kind. Always lending an ear and making life fun. Like the obituary said, " you could hear Mark near by "! Thats a great thing too. People were drawn to his bright beautful personality. Thanks for that Mark. Please RIP Mark. Cheers my friend !!!!!! Marc Asselin P.S. Mark, there are unlimited mulligans in Heaven, go (fore) it.... - Posted by: Marc Asselin (Friend) on: Apr 07, 2018
