ALICE NOLAN Alice Nolan (nee McIntyre) died peacefully in her sleep on April 20, 2018. She was born in Steelend, Fife, Scotland, on July 31, 1935, to Thomas and Sarah McIntyre. She was the oldest of five siblings. When she finished her secondary education she worked for a short time in a lawyer's office, then found her true vocation - nursing. She trained in infectious diseases in the 'fever hospital', Dunfermline, then went on to general nursing and midwifery. While training she met her future husband, James Nolan, then a medical student. They married in 1962. By the time her husband had finished his residency they had a daughter, Kathryn. From a sense of adventure, and a desire to help others, Alice and James applied to the British Ministry of Overseas Development, and were sent to Uganda. They spent two years there, and despite her heavy workload Alice managed to give birth to two sons, Frank and Andrew. After a spell of leave in Scotland they returned to Africa, this time to Kenya, where James was the doctor, and Alice the matron, in a hospital among the tea plantations of western Kenya. Unwilling to face a staid life in Scotland, the Nolans immigrated to Canada, living in various locations, including Thompson, Manitoba, and Marystown, Newfoundland, before finally settling in Winnipeg. There Alice continued her nursing career, and found time to enjoy Scottish Country dancing, ballroom dancing and line dancing, as well as being an active member of her church, Mary Mother of the Church, in Fort Richmond, Winnipeg. These years saw the births of her three grandsons, Sean, Mark and Matthew. The last few years of Alice's life were marred by increasing bad health, and from an active woman she became an invalid. Alice was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining. Her house was always immaculate, and her garden well cared for. People used to remark about her wonderful smile and friendly nature. She doted on her two little white West Highland terriers, Robbie and Bruce. Cremation has already taken place. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church, Fort Richmond, Winnipeg.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Nolan were regular customers at the Fort Richmond Safeway where I worked. They came in often, usually to buy fresh Scotch Bap buns, among other things. Mrs. Nolan was a very lovely, upbeat lady. When I moved to another store after our store closed, I continued to see the Nolans every Saturday. She always gave me a big hug. Mrs. Nolan will be sadly missed by many of us at our store. - Posted by: Kerry Hilton (Friend) on: Apr 28, 2018
