I remember Ken quite well. He always seemed to have a smile on his face. I believe he worked for Blackwoods and his bowling team was 7-Up with the Sunday morning Senior Mens League at CoMo. He bowled with Al Enns (wrote 5 pin bowling newsletter) and Norm Shanas. My parents bowled and introduced me to bowling at Gibson Junior league Saturday mornings downtown when I was in grade 7. I might be wrong but there was another very good bowler there, Bobby King. In high school my friend introduced to the Senior Men's League Sunday mornings at Como lanes. I got on Sam Shore's Classic Billiards team. You had to have a 200 average to join this league. To improve my bowling I started watching the really good bowlers and these bowlers had high averages 250 up into the 270's. Just to make your average I calculated how many strikes and spares you must have each game and for these averages, you really had to not only good but consistent. Bobby King had a very short delivery. Kenny had a longer run and a very fast ball. Norm used a sort of back up ball. I also took in the watched the Men's All Stars Friday evenings at Como and watched them and their deliveries. i guess i could say these bowlers were my mentors. I ended up copying Kenny longer run and Norm back ball. I have to thank Joe Cooper for his help when I practiced there. He told me that he didn't want to see a pin standing at the end of each frame even if I had to use 10 or 20 balls. I was there to practice. Well, I didn't get up to their levels as I bowled twice a week, best was 235 in high school . However, for Christmas, Al got turkeys from Burns and bowlers were put in flights. In the three weeks leading up to Christmas, your highest game was selected each week. Thank you Kenny and Norm. I rolled a 406 one week, 376 another week and the third week 258 the third week. When I looked at all the other winners in their flights, I had the highest three games total. Looking back, Ken, Bobby and Norm were reps on Manitoba's 5 pin teams for a number of years as they were so good. I can think back and see in my mind Ken's bowling style, his smile and his happy outlook to life. Thanks for the memories, Ken. - Posted by: colin dederick (former bowling league member, Senior Men's at CoMo lanes) on: Apr 28, 2018
