JIM (JAMES) DRENNAN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving dad, poppa, brother, uncle and friend. Dad passed away peacefully at Donwood Manor on June 24, 2018. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife, Blanche on January 12, 2018. We are comforted to know that they are together again. Dad was also predeceased by his parents, Ben and Ellen (Magill), and sisters, Molly and Peggy. Dad is survived by his loving son Kevin (Catherine); his brother Crawford (Joyce); his beloved granddaughters who brought him so much joy, Breanna Drennan-Bilyk (Brennen) and Kyla Drennan; the apples of his eyes, great-granddaughters, Mallory and Daphne Bilyk; his niece Janine Drennan-Alsip (Jason, Samuel and Ethan); his cousin Jim Magill, who was a good friend, and his family; his sisters-in-law, Beth (Ken) Somerset of England and Peggy Weir of Northern Ireland. Dad is also survived by his many nieces and nephews from England and Northern Ireland. Dad was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on December 5, 1926 where he spent his early years. He married Mum in 1952 and the decision was made to immigrate to Canada. Dad arrived in Winnipeg in September of 1952 and began work as a boilermaker at CN and six months later was able to send for Mum. Dad worked at CN for over 32 years as well as a short time for the City of Winnipeg. Dad was a kind, generous and gentle man, whose love of soccer and singing lead to the founding of the Winnipeg Irish Association, Folklorama's Emerald Isle Pavilion and his much loved Irish Tavern Singers. The Irish Club provided the friendship and camaraderie needed to adapt in a new country and this is where Dad made many lifelong friends. We would like to thank the staff at Donwood Manor for their kindness and exceptional care of Dad, and thanks to Carol Fletcher for her many visits and prayers. A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Transcona Memorial United Church, 290 Yale Ave. West, Winnipeg, MB R2C 1T9. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dad's memory to the TMUC Building Fund either by mail or online at www.canadahelps.org, or to Donwood Manor Personal Care Home, 171 Donwood Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2G 0V9. Dad, you will be greatly missed and always in our hearts. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I worked with Jimmy on and off through the '80s. Always a pleasure to work with, and age made no difference to him, he treated us “youngins” like friends. Reading all the other tributes is a testament to the type of person he was, as was easy to see in the times I was able to work with him. I’m sorry I was unable to attend his service, as I was out of the country. God Speed Jimmy ! - Posted by: Doug Perich (Co-worker) on: Sep 16, 2018

  • So sad to hear of Jim's passing. I always new Jim as a gentleman and his name brought the song "Danny Boy" to mind. I have never heard the song sung better than Jimmy's version. My hair used to stand on end listening to him. He sang it so well at every show we did. I will miss him. Jack Melville - Posted by: Jack Melville (Friend (ITS)) on: Jul 27, 2018

  • So sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to the Drennan family. Worked with him many years on the burning table at CN. A good person and friend. He will be sadly missed in my heart. - Posted by: RICHARD MILLER (Friend and fellow worker ) on: Jul 24, 2018

  • Very sad to hear of Uncle Jim's passing. He was a kind and gentle soul and I remember caddying on one occasion when my dad and him played golf. They let me take a shot from some distance back, and my golf was so bad I accidentally him Uncle Jim in the back with the golf ball, but he never complained. That was the nature of the man. At least and Aunty Blanche are together again after so many years. Love from Peter and my mum Peggy. - Posted by: peter weir (nephew) on: Jul 22, 2018

  • It was with sadness that I heard about Jim’s passing. I knew Jim for over 50 years and have fond memories of great times at the Winnipeg Irish Association and that wonderful voice singing Danny Boy - no one sang it better. When I immigrated to Winnipeg from Belfast in 1967 it was Jim who drove me around to job interviews and him and Blanch were so good to me. I know he has joined Blanch and hope they are enjoying a bowl of her great soup and soda bread. Rest in peace and thanks for the memories. - Posted by: Margaret Parke (Friend) on: Jul 03, 2018

  • We would like to offer our condolences to all of Jim’s family and want you to know that Billy, Peggy, Jane, Gary and Lucy are thinking of you all here in Belfast. - Posted by: Jane sheridan (Family relation ) on: Jun 30, 2018

  • Uncle Jim was a gentle giant, he was loved so much by his family here in Northern Ireland or The Old Country as he referred to it. He was a fabulous singer just like the rest of the Drennan clan, and we were very lucky to hear him sing at family gatherings both in Winnipeg and when he visited Belfast, and we will treasure tapes the Irish Tavern Singers. He once told me that Canada had been very good to him, but his heart would always be in The Old County, and that just flying over the green hills of the island of Ireland and into Belfast filled him with so much joy. Rest easy Uncle Jim, and thank you for being part of our lives, until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of his hand. Love Donna, Eleanor, Stephen, Denis and family circles in Northern Ireland - Posted by: Donna Galloway (Niece ) on: Jun 30, 2018
