HELEN MARY HARMATIUK (nee NEWTON) February 10, 1935 - July 29, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen Harmatiuk on July 29, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Donald (Heather) and Brian (Joyce); daughter Sharon (Stacey) and her grandchildren, Brina, Carley, Jordon, Laina, Brendan, Melissa and Danny. She is also survived by her sister Betty (Juel); her nieces and nephews; six great-grandchildren; extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond in 1977. Helen was born in the ghost town Anyox, British Columbia - one of the last children to be born there before the town was abandoned months later. She grew up in Flin Flon and Winnipeg, before moving to The Pas to train as a nurse, where she met Raymond Harmatiuk. They married on May 6, 1955. The three children were born in The Pas and the family lived in both Quebec and Ontario before returning to Winnipeg. She found great joy in being creative and using her brain; crosswords were a favourite pastime, as was baking, knitting, painting and reading. She also loved nature and being outside on her daily walks, bird watching, gardening and spending lots of time at the lake. She volunteered at the Grace Hospital gift shop for many years and enjoyed leading her fellow residents at the Kiwanis Village exercise class. As per her request, there will be no funeral service. The family gives a special thanks to the staff at Riverview Health Centre and the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation for their compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, mourners may donate in her honour to either organization. Wojcik's Funeral Chapels & Crematoriums, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg 204.897.4665 www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • What a lovely picture of your Mom you have published with her obituary. I am saddened to read of her passing. It is about 35 years ago I started working with her through the Nursing Office at the Grace Hospital. What fun times we had! I remember well how your Mom loved to laugh, and laugh we did! She loved each of you dearly and spoke of special things about each of you. Special sympathy to Sharon, as you were the only one I got to meet personally. My life has been enriched by having had her in it 💞 - Posted by: Barbara Larkin (Past co-worker/friend) on: Aug 14, 2018
