MARIUS STEENHUZIEN In the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 31, 2018, Marius Steenhuizen, our father, brother and dear Opa, left us peacefully to be reunited with his beloved wife Sunny and son Menno. Born in 1929 in Buitenzorg, Indonesia, Opa immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in 1966 with his wife and young family along with a crate of belongings, $500, a letter of reference and the hope of finding a job. The very day that they arrived in Winnipeg he landed a job as an airline electrician with Air Canada. His favourite memories of the "golden years" included gatherings with friends, playing badminton, and especially road trips through the Rocky Mountains and to Hawaii with his sweetheart and family. He was tenacious, always supportive and never critical. He had a quick sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart. After the passing of Sunny and Menno in 2000, he lived on his own in their family home, always with a woodcarving or two and a house-related project on the go. He spent the last 10 years living with his daughter Karen, son-in-law Darrell and grandchildren, Alexandra (Neil) and Daniel, and was arguably the most agreeable roommate of the bunch. He was keenly observant, always with a watchful eye and many rich stories for those that shared their time with him. He had a constant hankering for a crunchy snack or a game of Canasta. He especially enjoyed many years of conversation with the Coffee Gang on Wednesday mornings. He became an honorary Opa to our extended family and to all our friends and took this role on with great care. He will be deeply missed. The life you live is the lesson you teach. Following his wishes, interment and a private family celebration of his life will take place at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I did not know Marius personally, but if at least part of the measure of a man is the quality of his children, then I missed out because I knew Karen a little from high school. I remember Karen as a kind, happy, outstanding person. I am so sorry for your loss. Chris Camp - Posted by: Chris Camp (Only knew Karen) on: Jun 27, 2019
