THELMA DOAN Thelma Doan passed quietly in the early evening of August 16, 2018 at the age of 94. She was born to the late Theodore Lee and Emma (nee Gusdal) Lee on August 24, 1923 at Poplar Park farm near the town of Erickson, Manitoba. Some of Thelma's favourite memories were of growing up on the farm with her loving parents and siblings. Her remembrances always reflected a home that enjoyed practical jokes, kindness and a great empathy for family and community. Thelma loved children and after completing Grade 12 in 1941, began a 39-year teaching career that started in Round Lake School and ended with retirement after 30 years with the Transcona School District in 1980. She was truly committed to her students whose individualism amazed her and who she claimed continually taught her many life lessons as well. George Doan came into her life in August, 1943, they were married on his 24th birthday July 18, 1946. They had a love that endured 72 years, filled with laughter, love, respect and admiration that was apparent for all to see. He predeceased her on May 12, 2018. Thelma was a person with strong moral convictions, a strong faith, and a belief in the goodness of mankind, and she lived her life in accordance with those beliefs. Her humility and basic goodness taught not just her students but her children, family, friends and all whose lives she touched what it meant to live a life well lived. She will be dearly missed and is survived by her children and their spouses, Ted (Cathy), Dennis (Gloria) and Gayadelle (Philip Heimbecker); five grandchildren, Alethea, Christa, Lloyd, Matthewe and Aidan; and eight great-grandchildren, Arden, Mason, Cameron, Sadie, Jackson, Clark, Trystan and Leyton; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews as well as many cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore Lee and Emma (nee Gustal) Lee, siblings and their spouses, Ervin, John and Harriet, Merril and Adeline, Aileen, Martha and Clarence Erdahl, Levi and Eileen, Mary, Wallace and Gwen, Aileen and Roy Bridger, and Walter Johnston; and nephews, Garth Lee, Roland Lee and David Lee. Also her parents-in-law, Almon and Margaret Doan; and Doan family in-laws, Archie and Dora, Tom and Georgina, Patrick and Ruth, Winnifred and John Marcino, Kathleen and Herb Hirsekorn, Colleen and Rodney Hirsekorn, Todd Doan, and Patrick Doan. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 24 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 637 Buckingham Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Interment to follow at approximately 12:30 p.m. Sunday,, August 26, 2018 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Danvers. A special thank you to the staff at the Deer Lodge Centre for the kind and respectful care they gave to both our parents in these last few months of their lives. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My condolences to the Doan family on the recent loss of your dear Mother. Your mother taught me and my siblings at Queen Elizabeth School on Red River Drive, St. Norbert. I remember "Teddy" specifically. He was a year or 2 younger then I. The thing that I remember about Ted was that he was the only "redhead" in the school but also he was probably the only student in the school that was about to sound out every letter of the alphabet perfectly. No doubt the result of his mother's hard work and dedication to the teaching profession. Your mother lived a full life. Remember her for all the wonderful memories that she created for each of you as a family. - Posted by: Ken Niziol (Former Student) on: Aug 23, 2018
