ELIZABETH (LIZ) JOYCE BARKER (nee BURDZY) 1942 - 2018 On Thursday, August 30, 2018, Liz departed this world to join her mother and father, Franczeska and Kazimierz Burdzy after ceding a struggle with Cancer. She is survived by her son Christopher Barker and Christopher's father Edward Barker. She also leaves behind and will also be missed by her sister Filomena (Phylis) and nephew Kaz Kananowicz. Liz will be missed by her sister-in-law Margaret and nephew Terry. She will be missed and remembered by her friends, Maxine and Brian, and Helen O. She also will be missed by her friend from Red River College, Ely. Liz grew up in the heart of the North End of Winnipeg on Flora and attended Aberdeen Elementary. She graduated from St. John's High School and went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba with a BA of Fine Arts. Liz pursued continuing education and also attended Red River College to receive a Diploma in Creative Communications. She resided and spent her remaining years in St. James and retired from the Winnipeg Public Library having worked at the Centennial and St. James branches. The philosophical rivalry between Liz and Time have come to an end. She now waits for us to join her one day at that Bohemian Cafe where the clock does not tick and is hosted by an ethereal Folio Society frequented by artists, authors, poets, dreamers and believers. We will be reminded of you Liz every time we listen to Quirks and Quarks on CBC radio. We will be reminded of you when we notice an interesting graphic on a tea box or candy tin and are reminded of the potential you envisioned it contained to be turned into a work of art. Liz lived with the holy spirit (Matthew 12:31 - 32) in her and was a friend to the friendless. We love you and will miss you Liz. Liz would have wanted to thank all the doctors, nurses and aides at CancerCare Manitoba and the Women's Pavilion. She would have wanted to thank all Canadian tax payers contributing to Tommy Douglas' and Lester B. Pearson's vision of the Canadian value that allowed us to extend her time with us just that much longer. There will be one arrangement of yellow flowers at the celebration of Liz's life. Acts of condolences can be directed to CancerCare Manitoba in memory of her. For details of a date and time for a celebration of Liz's life, email kazmir@mts.net or call or text 204-997-6922.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Liz and I worked together at the St James Library. She was a kind and gentle soul and I will never forget the warmth her smile brought to the customers and staff each and every day. My thoughts and prayers are with you Chris and your family. - Posted by: Leanne Gibson (Former co-worker) on: Sep 13, 2018

  • I worked with Liz at St. James Library 9 years ago. She was always so kind and friendly - I truly enjoyed when I had the chance to work a shift with her. When I left the employ of Winnipeg Public library, she gave me a lovely handmade card, and a little Hedgehog, which I hold dear to me. Even though I was newer to libraries, she always made me feel like I belonged. My deepest sympathy to Liz's family. May her kind soul rest in peace. - Posted by: Colleen Fowler (Co-worker) on: Sep 12, 2018

  • Liz had a calm and humble disposition that afforded her much grace. God had blessed her with an artistic eye and an inventive mind, and she willingly shared those gifts with everyone. To Chris (and extended family), may your fond memories grant you peace. - Posted by: Deb (Former co-worker at St. James Library) on: Sep 11, 2018
