TED MATTHEWS (MATHEOS) 1934 - 2018 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Ted Matthews (Matheos) on September 10, 2018. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Maria. Ted is survived by his children, Demetra (Bill), Sam (Darcy), Nancy and Linda, and grandchildren, Cassidy, Alexandra, Reilly, Madeleine and Isabella. He is also survived by his siblings, Maria, George, John and Steve, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Saranto and Demetra. Ted was born in Skoura, Greece. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 and settled in Winnipeg. In 1963, he married the love of his life Maria and they had four children. For over 40 years they operated a restaurant, the Highway Host - always referred to as "Ted's" or "Ted and Mary's." His favourite time in the restaurant was in the morning, arguing with the farmers about politics or sitting with his friends to have a cup of coffee. Late at night, he would kick out the rowdy yet they would always come back and tell him he was their friend. He was a huge sports fan and you could often find him in the restaurant in front of the television watching Monday Night Football or Hockey Night in Canada. Ted loved the outdoors and if he wasn't at the restaurant, you could usually find him at his farm where he would happily serve you a scotch in a coffee cup. In his retirement, he and Maria would travel to Greece every summer where they would be with their friends, young and old. Ted would often lead the young guys from Varvitsa to another nearby village where there was a party to meet other friends. In Winnipeg, he would meet up with his many friends for coffee every day. More recently, his greatest pleasure was spending time with all his grandchildren whom he adored immensely. The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Palliative team on the 16th floor at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the Palliative team of St. Elizabeth's. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made to Lung Cancer Canada or Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Funeral services will be held in Toronto. The family will welcome visitors on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Centre, 50 Overlea Boulevard, Toronto. The funeral service will be held at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 3125 Bayview Avenue, Toronto on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg in October, details to follow.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I am so sorry to hear of Ted's passing. My mom used to work at the restaurant and I babysat you kids a few times. The last time I saw Ted he gave me the biggest hug. We told him mom had passed away and he was so sad. He was such a nice man and I have many fond memories. Me and my friends were in the restaurant one night when he was watching hockey, we put money in the jukebox and he got mad and unplugged it. We thought it was funny. Dear Ted he will be missed. - Posted by: Anne Martens (Friend) on: Sep 20, 2018

  • I send my condolences to all the family. At the Highway Host your father always made me and all my friends feel very welcome, and that he was happy we'd come for breakfast, lunch or supper. He'd be quick to keep our coffee cups filled and to have friendly chat. We will miss him. - Posted by: Helen Whetter (Friend) on: Sep 18, 2018
