EDWARD SMILINSKY It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of their father Ed on September 11, 2018. He was predeceased by his wife Gayle (Chick); parents, George and Anne; brother Walt; and brother-in-law Danny. Left to mourn are his sons, Dan (Olga), Darrell (Yvonne), Brent and Mark (Jamie); daughter Karen (Steve); grandchildren, Steven, Alex, Tara, Jason and Rachelle; brothers-in-law, Bob (Thelma) and Frank (Jean), along with their families in Thunder Bay and the Sault; and sisters-in-law, Marge and Cathy Elmore. Ed was born in Winnipeg on February 18, 1932. He grew up in Point Douglas and then Elmwood. Dad worked at CN, Griffin Steel, was Secretary Treasurer of CAIMAW, drove truck for Direct and Motorways, and later for Vital Transit. When Dad married, his number one priority was providing for and taking care of his family. We would head to the beach many weekends and our friends were always welcome to come along. Dad worked extra jobs so that we could go on a family road trip every summer and explore much of North America. We all enjoyed the many visits to Thunder Bay and Shabandowan Lake. In the winter we learned as a family how to downhill ski and had lots of laughs tobogganing. There was never a time that he was too busy to teach us kids how to fix and build things. He had almost as much fun building go-carts for us as we did driving them. Dad's positive outlook, enjoyment of good conversation, and ever-present sense of humour were just a few reasons why he was able to make so many lifelong friendships with equally wonderful people like Velda and John, Rose and Norm and too many others to mention. We were so blessed to have such amazing parents, and they will live on in our hearts forever. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. www.voyagefuneralhomes.com

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • So nice of you to express your heartfelt thoughts. So good may it be to reminisce with you in days to come. Thinking often and dearly missed... that is certain. Pops was a great Dad. He was supportive and forgiving. And so was Mom. They always had a smile and a hug for me, wonderful conversation, and tremendous laughter! I was lucky to have them. We all were. - Posted by: Brent (third son) on: Nov 28, 2018

  • I had the good fortune of knowing Ed through his son, and my good friend, Brent. Ed set a good example about how a man should carry himself as a father, husband, and friend. I will always carry his words of wisdom with me. He is missed. - Posted by: Kenn White (Good friend to his son Brent) on: Oct 06, 2018

  • Ed was a loving father/grandfather and father-in-law...so welcoming and warm. He raised his sons to be good fathers and I always admired him. What a profound emptiness it must be for the family...thinking of you all during your time of loss/need. I do think of you often. I lost my father when he was 57 and they were both men to aspire from...xoxo miss you both. - Posted by: Kathryn Hunt (Ex daughter-in- law) on: Sep 22, 2018
