DAVID SMELTZER The family of David Smeltzer wish to announce his passing on September 26, 2018 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB. David was predeceased by his parents, Cliff and Vera Smeltzer, and his great-nephew Clifford Bailey. He is survived by his sister Linda Bailey (Terry); his brothers, Jim and Doug Smeltzer (Barb); his nephews, Paul Bailey (Crystal), Mike St. Onge (Mandy) and Kyle Smeltzer (Ashley) and his niece Kinzie Bailey (Andy). Also by his great-nephews, Grayson, Fergus and Flynn Bailey, Josh St. Onge and Kohen Smeltzer, and his great-niece MacKenzie Smeltzer. David was born October 9, 1958 in Edmonton, AB and moved with this family to Winnipeg in 1964 where he in lived in Westwood through out his school years. While attending Westwood Collegiate and participating in the school musicals David discovered both his love and talent for singing. While studying education at the University of British Columbia the continued to hone his singing skills. Over the years David sang with choirs, the Vancouver Opera Company, musical theatre companies like Rainbow Stage and Manitoba Theatre Centre, and toured the world as a member of the Phantom of the Opera cast. When his illness started to make acting and singing very difficult David began to make use of his education degree and worked in the Adult Education department in the Seven Oaks School Division, a job that he loved. The family wish to thank Doctors Karpinski and Bellas, and the staff of 4GA and the Dialysis Unit at Health Sciences Centre for their skillful and concerned care of David. To all of David's friends and former work colleagues, thank you so much for spending time with him in his last few weeks. A very special thanks to his friends, Kim Marr who was the kind of loving, caring friend we all hope to have, and David's lifelong friend Don Gange who was with him at the end. At David's request there will be no funeral service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Donations in David's memory can be made to Seven Oaks Educational Foundation, 830 Powers St., Winnipeg, MB R2V 4E7. www.voyagefuneralhomes.com

  • Linda, Jim & Doug. I am very sorry to hear of David's passing. So many memories came flooding back during the past few days - Carousel at Westwood in 1974, working at the Bay together, roommates for over a year, him in Phantom and our trip to New York, just to name a few. Always thoughtful with a great sense of humour and he was a rock for me when my mother passed away. My kids always enjoyed having him over and would enjoy helping him whenever they could. We will all miss him and I will think of him often. And his voice. WOW!!! I am glad to have known him as long and as well as I did. Take care. - Posted by: Allen Nixon (friend) on: Sep 29, 2018
