DONALD ARTHUR YAGER
Date of Passing: Sep 30, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD ARTHUR YAGER It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Arthur Yager, on September 30, 2018, in the comfort of his own home in Keewatin, ON, at the age of 66 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Clara and is survived by his loving wife, Gisela, daughter Kelly (Jason) and son Jason (Jessica) and grandchildren, Mikayla, Sydney, Joshua, Jace and Dominic. Don and Gisela were happily married on August 11, 1973 at the First English Lutheran Church and just recently celebrated their 45th anniversary. They spent and enjoyed many years together and built so many memories at the lake, where they finally semi-retired in 2015. Don was an amazing husband and devoted father. He enjoyed spending time at the lake with his family and pistol shooting at various clubs. As his shooting interest grew over the years, he was nominated for a membership and later became a life member of the Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol Association. From there he went to a number of local tournaments and competitions and even proudly represented Manitoba at the Western Canada Games in the early 1970s. He worked in the construction field for over 18 years to then make a career change as a Project Coordinator at HSC. From there he happily landed his final change to become self employed as a General Contractor, where he used his skills and built numerous homes and projects. He was known to be a problem solver who often took on multiple tasks and always wanted to lend a helping hand. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 59 Academy Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation, 21 Sylvan Street W., Kenora, ON P9N 3W7, or at: www.lwdhf.com/donations/in_honor/

Condolences from Betty and Howard Unger. We're so sorry about your loss. Don saw that the window at our cottage was broken and he took time out to cover it with a sheet of plywood during our absence. We really did appreciate his help. Thanks, Don, you were a good neighbour and friend. Gisel, we wish you God's blessings. - Posted by: Howard Unger (Friends and neighbors at Trout Lake) on: Jun 30, 2020

Gisela I just read that Don had passed away. I am so sorry for your loss. Please pass on our condolences to Kelly, Jason and families. So many hours we sat together Gisela so the girls could do their gymnastics. I will always remember the friendship we had and our trip to your lake. - Posted by: Rosalind Scaife (Friend) on: Jan 16, 2019

Worked with Don for several years at HSC in the early 1990's. I was a new jr employee and Don helped show me the ropes and befriended me. I had the pleasure of returning the favour helping him at his church with some sound system work. I only saw him a few times since he left HSC. My prayers are with the family and may God console you as you go through this time of grief. - Posted by: Craig Doerksen (CoWorker from HSC) on: Oct 28, 2018

Was very saddened to hear of Don's passing from a mutual friend Irene Deane. So very sorry for your loss. I was married to Rick Skutnik for many years and that is when I knew Don. Had trips to that lake and I still have the fun pictures from that weekend! He was one of a kind and I know he will be missed by many as he was a kind and good friend and always ready to help. Condolences to his lovely wife Giselle and the whole family. - Posted by: Charlotte Rosen( Charlie) (Old friend) on: Oct 28, 2018

Gisela, we are sad to hear of Don's passing and give condolences to you and your family. Don will always have a special spot in my memories of us growing up as a teenager and into our 20's. Memories of having a good time whether we were at his place in the city, at Trout Lake, or just hanging out at Top's. - Posted by: Gord Huminuk (Friend) on: Oct 24, 2018

The last time I saw Don was at a friends Anniversary social in Winnipeg a number of years ago. What a pleasure to be able to catch up on our lives with Don and Gisela. I have so many fond memories of the safe haven that Don and his parents provided by letting our group invade their basement during our teen years. We spent hours playing pool, listening to music and having a couple of beers to relax. No one was judged and everyone was welcomed and accepted with open arms. The exercusions to the Yagers cabin at Trout Lake with the parties and adventures created stories for years to come. Thank you for all the memories. They bring a smile and tear to ones face everytime I think of them. I will remember your smile, your laugh and your friendship. My sincere condolences to Gisela and the family. - Posted by: Danny Kowarchuk (Friend) on: Oct 20, 2018

Our sympathy and thoughts are with Don's family at this time. Don always had a smile and a friendly wave as he worked between projects at HSC. The memories of trips to Don's family cottage by all the guys are indelibly set as great times by those who went. The shananigans and adventures during these trips are some of the best of memories. - Posted by: Brian & Judy Wiebe (Friends) on: Oct 19, 2018

A large part of my late teen years were spent in Don's parents basement most weekends with a group of friends and hanging out at the Sal's on Ellice Ave. The same group of us would go out to Don's family cottage in the winter for a weekend of fun and did so on a few occasions. He will always be part of a good memory of our youth. Saw Don and Gisela on occasion over the years and it was always good to see them and have a catch up conversation. A few of us got together with them last year before Christmas when we heard about Don's illness. I am so glad I went and got to see him and Gisela then. - Posted by: Mark and Tia Beakley (friend) on: Oct 13, 2018

I lost touch with all those Winnipeg West End guys shortly after high school. I often remember and share the memory of the generosity of his parents - we could shoot pool and drink a little beer in his basement, but Dad took everyone's car keys when we walked in the door. And the weekend trips to the cottage near Kenora, especially one winter trip, walking across the lake with the ice cracking loudly under our feet. It's no surprise that he wound up living out that way. It was wonderful, and I'm grateful. - Posted by: Myron A Zurawsky (Friend) on: Oct 13, 2018
